Well, no matter what browser I use, it still goes shooting off to unknown websites. Sometimes they are malware sites. Sometimes just ad sites.
This all started when I left my computer for awhile with the browser sitting on the stats page.
When I came back is when I found the data execution prevention and the miscreant file name.
What I’m guessing happened is the browser went off to a malware site, etc.
Even though 5 security programs say all is fine now, these browser redirects keep happening.
And here is another very interesting clue. When I go to a search engine’s homepage and do a search for HP or cnet, etc. the appropriate results come up. But if I click on the appropriate result, the browser attempts to go to a malware or ad site instead. Manually entering the address works fine, but clicking on any of the search engine links sends it off to misery-land. This happens with both google and bing. This happens with both firefox and IE. I have never seen this happen before. And I have never heard of this happening before.
What computer settings to I need to fix to stop this and where are they?
Windows XP.
Another note:
Uninstalling the browsers and getting fresh, pristine, new ones does not work. The new ones still keep doing the same thing. So, they are either:
Being immediately reconfigured by malware that 5 security programs can’t detect.
Or
It’s a Windows setting(s) that has/have been hijacked and needs to be fixed.

You may want to start closing your browser when you're away from your computer for more than 5-10 minutes. I'm sure someone will come along and be able to help with the right settings. I'm not sure what the problem is. Hope you get it worked out.
Yep.
I sure hope so. This is a first for me.
Thank You Izzy!
Your links prove that I am not the first to have these exact same problems; so I can at least set aside the concern that HP and everyone else was thinking that I was a stark raving lunatic. Unless, of course, they already think that anyway.
I’ve already implemented some of the info, and am working through the rest.
paradigm, I've been having the exact same problem! I've done everything I can think of, but it's getting completely irritating. Cleaned my system, have adaware, etc... But, it continues. I will check out Izzy's links. Thanks, Izzy. Let me know if you find a solution, paradigm and I will do the same.
That is worrying if we now have two HP users with the same issue!
If it came from an advert, and ads are geographical, are you two both in the same area?
I notice one of the 'cures' was to download and run 'Trojan Remover'. http://www.simplysup.com/
I was a beta tester for this program years ago, and I've got to say it is one of the best programs ever. Unfortunately it is not free, but there is a free trial period which may well be enough to clean your computers up.

Not long ago my security software ran out, and I wasn't sure which one I wanted to go with. While I was deciding a friend recommended at least installing MalWarebytes (which is free) in the meantime. Sorry for the length of this, but I have a weird mess on my hands. Yesterday morning I...

I made a minor change in a title and wanted to correct it in articles linked to that title. I can bring up the link box and when I click on the article that comes up, it's URL appears in the "insert" box, but then it does not insert. Is anybody else having this problem? ...

I'm new here and not sure if this is a bug or what. I went onto my new hub from another person's computer and not signed in to see what it looks like from another perspective when I noticed that links had been inserted into my text. It doesn't appear when I am signed in. It gives the appearance...
