I find a quiet spot, clear my head, focus on one thing, usually something important to me, and meditate on it. Sometimes it takes a while to calm the mind, especially when  you have a lot of stressers. If smells help you relax, find a candle or incense that has a smell you enjoy. If your audio, play some mood music to relax your mind. Breath deeply, and exhale slowly. Do this until your mind begins to relax.

I have tried to stay there in bed and toss and turn trying to get to sleep. It makes it worse, the harder you try the more you toss and turn.
I find it is when you are trying to work out something that has happened during the day, you are looking for an answer.
I get out of bed now, get a piece of paper and a pen and write out what I am thinking about. Give some short answers to the problem.
I find if you actually sit and write out what is bothering you, you will then be able to go back to bed and sleep.
It is almost healing. I have done this many times and it does work, believe it or not.
    You have nothing to lose.

Lately I've gotten hooked on a word game called "Book Worm" that is available on my TV from my cable provider ... when I can't sleep I play that till my eyes get droopy.

I'll read for a little bit so that my mind can relax. Then if I really HAVE to get to sleep, I have a relaxation technique that works most of the time. I'll get as comfortable as I can, close my eyes, take 3 deep breaths, think of one positive thought, and relax my body by muscle groups, starting with my feet - legs- torso- arms- and head. I name each part of my body working up to my head, and I usually go to sleep somewhere around my arms smile Hope this helps.

Start surfing the net on my Blackberry, type up Hubs I want to write, update my blogs. I usually pass out after about six minutes of this on that tiny keyboard.

Well I try praying. If that doesn't work I read something interesting. If that doesn't work I plan what I'm wearing if I'm going somewhere.
If that doesn't work I redecorate my house or my patio.
If that doesn't work I get up and take a pill.

I write a huge article on it, but last night I tried counting as high as I could, this failed because It was not hard enough I found myself thinking and counting. So I tried counting backwards from 1,000... Lets say I made it to 900 before I ended up at 960... then I was out hahaha

I read a book. And when I mean a book, I read the whole book. Some of the books I have read in one night are all the Harry Potter books (read them each on a different night), and Stephen King's the Green Mile.
