Easter Traditions Around the World
Easter Traditions
When I saw the HubMob topic this week was Easter I decided to write a hub about some Easter Traditions around the world.
I did some research to find some interesting traditions around the world and began this hub.
I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it.
Hot Cross Buns
The History of Hot Cross Buns
In many Christian Countries Hot Cross Buns are toasted and eaten on Good Friday the cross signifying the cross Jesus was Crucified upon.
Elizabeth I Queen of England 1558-1603 being a protestant Queen passed a law banning bakeries from selling Hot Cross Buns apart from at Easter and Christmas; however nowadays supermarkets sell them all year round.

If you have no daughters,
Give them to your sons

Kite Museum in China
Kite Flying
Kite flying originated in China as an old custom.
In Weifang, Shandong, China there is a kite museum and it was where the 1st International Kite Festival took place in 1984 when more than 10,000 kite fans attended and this annual event has continued each April since then. It is a custom among the people of Weifang to fly Kites at springtime a Chinese tradition marking the start of Spring.
However the idea of Kite Flying is seen in several countries around the world to mark Easter too.
In Bermuda people make and fly Kites to symbolise the rising of Christ. Bermuda holds the world records for highest and longest Kite Flying.
Kites are also flown in Greece and Cyprus but on the first day of Lent.
Egg Rolling at the White House
White House Stuff
White House Egg Rolling
Almost 140yrs ago newspapers told of how Washington Children began a custom of egg rolling; originally congregating at the Capitol but in later years being allowed onto the White House South Lawns.
The 1st White House Egg Roll was on Easter Monday 1878 and has been enjoyed by many throughout subsequent years. There have been occasions when the event has had to cancelled due to bad weather and there were a number of years during World War II when it had to relocated from the South Lawns but eventually in 1933 Eleanor Roosevelt had the event returned to the White House greeting visitors and listeners alike via a nationwide radio hook-up.
In 1974 the modern Egg Rolling Race using spoons from the White House Kitchens was introduced.
Presidents and their families have long enjoyed the White House's largest public celebration, and it has been customary, from the outset, for Presidents, First Ladies, their children, grandchildren and pets to attend the festivities.
One of the most eagerly anticipated guests each year, of course, is the Easter Bunny. The White House Easter Bunny, (usually a White House member of staff dressed in a special White House rabbit suit), was introduced by the wife of President Richard Nixon in 1969.
The Spirit of Easter
Having looked into these traditions and even the memorabilia you can buy connected to some of these events I was overwhelmed by two feelings.
1. The joy of the great tradition that the USA share at Easter time with everyone from the President to the everyday person.
and
2. A sadness that we don't have anything like this in the UK at this scale (at least not to my knowledge), I have read that some local events take place in Northern areas of the UK but they are smaller community events and certainly not attended by Royalty.
If there is one thing that I wish we could turn back time on in the UK it would be to bring back the neighbourhood spirit we had in the past. Though the community spirit at a smaller degree level continues in some areas (mostly Northern Counties) it is something very much lacking these days in the UK.
I couldn't imagine Queen Elizabeth out with the people rolling Easter Eggs I am glad that the US Presidential line have continued this tradition for so long and wonder if the American People realise how lucky they are sometimes!!??
