Flip through any men’s mag (the health and fitness kind!) and most of the blokes you see are going to have nice, smooth chests with very little hair. If any. Some of those guys may have been born without the genes to produce lots of fuzz – but most of them weren’t.

Now, I’m not going to sit here and tell you I drool over the Paul Bunyan look. But I like the Girlie-Man look even less – and that’s what you look like when you go shaving yourself back to pre-pubescence. If you’re totally clueless as to what I’m going on about, just watch an episode of Baywatch.

Sexy Pierce Brosnan
Sexy Pierce Brosnan

If you can keep your eyes off the chicks long enough to look at the guys, that is. Apart from David Hasselhoff, these guys have chests that resemble a baby’s bottom. Looks pretty good on TV, I admit. But I cringe when I see this in person at the gym or on the beach.

Who wants a high-maintenance male? If you check out Dave from his Knight Rider days, he had quite a bit of chest hair. And women seemed to dig it, cos he was getting his man nipples out at every op in those 80’s pics. Not that super fuzz is hawt stuff either. So what do you do? You go for fuzz-management, as opposed to fuzz-removal.

Trim That Bad Boy

If you really want to highlight your chest, the best way is to bring the fuzz in line. All you need to do is trim your body hair. Keep in mind, if you trim it too much, it will not look natural. The idea is to maintain it without making it look like you put too much effort into it.

If you have a lot of chest hair, you might end up trimming quite a bit – if it’s already sparse, adjust accordingly! It’s like getting a regular haircut – just give those wayward locks a shape to conform to and that will be fine.

No Shaving the Chest, Please

Unless you intend to do this every single day, and do it well, you’re bound to have stubble here. I am so not throwing you down and having my way with you if I have to worry about your sandpapery chest!

No waxing the chest, please.

This is top of the line high maintenance. There is only room for one vain person per relationship and the man should not be that person! Now, if you have a super fuzzy chest and really want to keep it going on, more power to you. There are definitely women who prefer that look, so it’s not like you’re never going to get a date that way. Just remember one thing – if you *do* have lots of chest hair, please keep it in your shirt. That style where it pokes out of the collar? Wouldn’t even look good on Brad Pitt.

I'd much rather spend time with a hairy man than one who spends too much time (by my reckoning) shaving or waxing. Be yourself! If that's a hairy self, so be it. Rock on.

I have never had a single hare on my chest, had a couple of rabbits though lol sorry isabella couldn't resist that one.

i have never shaved my chest though because i don't have a hairy chest, smooth as the preverbial baby's bottom, when i was in my teens i used to check every day but the chest hair never came, when i got my first facial hair i forgot all about my poor bald chest and now at 40 i have about three hairs now maybe at this rate i will have a hairy chest on my 300th birthday.........jimmy

hi isabella. by the way, your 1 sexy looking chic. i have so much hair on my chest, i look like big foot lol. i had heart surgery in 1996 and they shaved my chest and i thought i was going to go crazy when it was growing back, so no more shaving for me, the women will have to take me as i am, but iam bald , wish it would grow up there too.nice page you have.

Hi Lisabella

Its nice to know that there is women out in the world that like men with chest hair, I'm 17 years old and I joined a school sport team and we had to take off our clothes to play and I got so badly mad infun of because I have hair on my chest. thank you for the inspering words

Jimmy - Well you're one of the few! I'm not at all saying it's bad not to have hair - I'm just saying if men have it they shouldn't shave it off.

Lloyd - Good for you - if it's out of control you can always trim it. :)

Vincent - Oh God don't listen to kids in school they're always idiots. If you have a lot of chest hair you can always trim it, but don't shave it, it will itch like hell growing back and it will look strange. And if you do trim, don't trim too much or it will look patchy. I'm sure you look fine, just ignore the kids!!

I've always loved my chest hair, but didn't feel confident women liked it. And I think the way I maintained it, which was not very much and many hairs grew to 2+ curly inches, was not very nice to look at. A week ago I bought the Philips Bodygroom and used the #3 (leaves the longest hair) on my entire chest. Now I think it look great and I can keep the chest hair I love! I think the hairless fad was due to the perception of cleanliness, and now that I have tamed the forest, I think I have achieved a look that is masculine and also demonstrates being neat/tidy/clean which I think is the real hang-up some women have with male body hair.

Jake  says:

I'm 16 and covered in hair. Guys in the changing room would taunt, mainly the ones with no hair at all. I tried waxing but my hair from down below used to stick out too, and it would look pretty weird with a really straight line beneath my boxers. I trim now and all the girls find it really sexy and masculine.

Bek  says:

finally, the right approach to chest hair(on men). Although I do like those Brasilian girls with the hair down their backs too...fine downy hair. So sexy. Shaving body hair on men became fashion about 15 years ago dooming me to a dying few natural men who refuse to give in to fashion. I have been called Jesus, Jopie Adam or Jeremiah Johnson. But I must say, even girls I have dated who didn't like body hair in the beginning, grew to love it after we dated for some time. I did lose a few girlfriends for not shaving my beard though.

Shawn  says:

I'm a fairly hairy 25yo guy but I don't agree with shaving it clean. I trim most of the body hair, and I wouldn't mind getting the fuzz off my back, but for the most part I'm still one of those guys that feels like shaving it off clean, or noticably shaping it is wayyy to feminine for my liking. It makes guys look weird. A little trim so they're not curling into themselves and "growing wild" is fine.. I also like to keep a goatee, chin strap, and maybe a beard for a month or so. Beards are great, and everyone I know who grows one out really starts to like it, and their girlfriends start to as well. I think we're too influenced by these people on TV who are scultped, hairless, and look nothing like the average person. Women, please don't judge a guy by his bodyhair or beard... if you want a guy like on TV, then please don't refer to him as a man (unless it's natural). If you prefer that type of guy, consider how much effort he has to put into that and what he's really doing with his time. Like I said, I like to trim, but right now my chest and arm hair would be considered very hairy because I simply didn't have the time to trim. It doesn't make me a less eligible bachelor, in fact, I'm happy I spend my time in a good, white-collared job, studying for Grad school, taking on side projects like building websites for small companies, etc etc. Fellas, I can honestly say there's nothing better than the wind blowing through your arm/chest hair on a summer day while you're in a tank top and shorts, driving a luxury european sedan. LoL, My body hair is more of a symbol of my hard work, the fact that i'm not a person who spends his time in front of the mirror or worrying about how i look for a good portion of my waking day. This world is becoming way to vain, don't give into that.

i like your fashion articles, Isabella.. I didn't expect that chest hair would be sexy! i've a very hairy chest as maybe u noticed in my pic....but ouch! i never thought about shaving it...i prefer to look ugly :P u know what the real problem is? BACK hair in men....i don't think this is sexy to women, i dunno...butt hair also and im sure these two can't be shaved...

thnx

finally, I am 17 and am always being teased about my abnormally hairry. I shaved it once, big mistake, it grew back very itchy and looked really werid. I'm glad to see that people still dig the hairy chest. (PS: reason I shaved it was because I am on my school's rugby and wrestling team, and it often gets pulled and ripped out) now I just trim instead of it all off, PS: idk why men would shave their under arms, chest, and unmentionables, a trim is better then nothing at all!

Men with hair on their chest and abs. Completely a HUGE turn on. Men who shave their chests....way too feminine for my liking. I have to say, all of my girlfriends agree with me :) Keep it on guys!

I totaly agree with this article.

Shaving your chest is totaly wierd, not to mention the effort and the pain that you have to go through.

The media's to blame for this issue. Women, for the love of god, don't believe in what you see or hear on the media!

I am 15 and I never really had that much of a big problem with my chest being very hairy. This girl, who is now my girlfriend, told me that she doesnt like chest hair. I decided to shave it off. My brother told me i shouldn't have done it because it increases the growth and it looks bad if i dont shave every 2 days. I really dont know what to do because im really hairy for my age and it makes me feel insercure that most girls frown appon this. I really love my girlfriend and i dont want this to be such a big problem. What should I do?

Chest Hair is coming back like it was in the 80s! (in the hollywood world). I saw a Hollister or American Eagle ad which had a guy with shirt open and some chest hair.

I can only understand shaving your chest if you are a body builder because they have to show every muscle curve, but as for me I work out but just trim every now and then.. I can't imagine shaving every week or even more, that's way too much effort for a look.

You ever watch Beauty and the Geek? I only watched it a couple times, might have been season 2? They had a guy as a "beauty" and he admiited to shaving his ARMS along with everything else, 10 hours a week went into shaving his body I think... that's a whole other level of metro-sexual.

Back to the work out thing, building muscle.. I look at having hair to my advantage, I have to work extra hard for the muscle definition to show with chest hair so I will be that much stronger :)

I`m happy to see girls admiting that they like men as they are, not like magazines want us to be (ok, there is no denial - if anything is too much it isn`t pretty, but we are not talking about that). I have hairy chest and my girlfriend (including other girls I have met) like it - that makes me feel like real man not like some minor boy or metrosexual. Thanks for good article, I hope that`ll help more men not to blindly follow magazines etc.

P.S. What`s your opinion about shaving (or triming) armpit hair?

Hey guys,

Great article here. I'm 21 and I have a hairy body. I understand where you other guys are coming from. For me, one area should be bare and that is the back. Wax or laser it off. No girl finds a hairy back attractive.

As for hair in other parts of your body, keep it. If it's like a jungle, then trim it. Another option is to wax that area continuously for about 1-2 years and then let it grow out and you will notice the hair to be much thinner and shorter. That's what I'm doing with my arms and legs. I'm only waxing so that I can permanently reduce the hair, NOT get rid of it. Hair is a sign of masculinity!

Nature has bestowed perfect body stucture to all animals, including human. There is distinct purpose of each and every item of the body. Restricting to the subject, hair is important for the maintence of health, culture, and gender clarificaton for the onlookers.

In many parts of theworld, girls recognizes men with chest hair as reliable and trust worthy.

Just like the breast enhances the feminity look of woman, so does the chest hair of man.

Most girls, i met with, liked menwith hair on the chest

you see, i bet this article will come into play more later in life. as of now i'm 16, but i'm practically exactly what she was talking about. i have hair on my stomach and chest, but its not overwhelming at all. its a nice amount. but some of my friends who see it (girls) think its a tad off-putting. its probably just a teen thing

Bobbi  says:

Honestly, men being hairless completely turns me off. I think its a masculine/feminine contrast thing. Women should be smooth and hairless and men should be rough and hairy. I don't like a man with a smooth face either, every time my bf shaves for the first time he rubs his icky smooth cheeks on my face to see me try to get away. It feels so wrong:P

All of my friends like a clean shaved chest on a guy, and a smooth face, but give me a real man anyday:)

First comment in a couple of months, but still this was really good for me to read. My ex had me shave/wax my chest because she preferred it without, and it seems like every "attractive guy" has no hair on his chest. Worried the days where "men who look like men" to quote a previous comment were gone, but glad to hear there are women who actually like chest hair.

- Andrew (21)

PS. Haven't shaved or waxed since the ex became the ex, just occassional trimming to keep it all in check.

i just cant stand seeing guys with no chest hair. it just doesnt look right at all. when i was at school me and my friends used to talk about what we liked in men and all of them said "ewww no hair" one of them said she would make her boyfriend shave everything, that includes armpits and leg hair (why?) i was kinda embarassed to say that i hated hairless men so i just kept quiet. but now i just say that i do like hair. im 18 now and still dont know anyone who likes hairy men.

legs, chest, stomach, armpit. there has to be hair. even dark thick forearm hair is a turn on.

so to any guys that are embarassed by thier chest hair or are thinking of shaving/waxing. my advice. dont. body hair on a man is sexy.

bring on the hair!!!!! :D
