Ms Harris started writing short stories while she was a student at RhodesCollege in Memphis, Tennessee. She had a few successes and was even short listed for Best Novel for an Agatha Christie Award.

The first of the Sookie Stackhouse books was written in the early part of 2000. The books centre on the life of a true Southern Belle called Sookie. She lives in a fictional place called Bon Temp which is situated in Northern Louisiana. She works as a waitress in the town’s main watering hole.

She is a very interesting character because of one particular trait that she possesses. She is a telepath. This means that she is able to hear people’s thoughts. Whatever they are thinking or whatever they are feeling, Sookie has the ability to tune into their minds and know their every thought. This ability has made her a little bit of an outcast with some people because they think that she is more than a little strange.

Sookie has decided to share the knowledge of her particular skill with very few people. Only her family and her closest friends know about it.

Charlaine Harris has created a place where the supernatural is all around. This is a time and a place where humans share the earth with all sorts of supernatural creatures. This includes vampires, shapeshifters and werewolves among other things.
