Does it make sense to write a hub with just text, then add photos and capsules later?

I've got lots of material I can put together, but don't really have the time to find photos and get permissions, etc., right now, and have a big learning curve to get a real handle on this. Do people build these hubs over time? Are there disadvantages?

I think you have to do what's necessary to put your Hubs together. Sometimes, you will have time to write the articles and find photos, all in one or two days. Other times, it might take a week or longer to piece together a story. If you've written papers for school or for some other purpose, you can think about revising them as a Hub article. I often begin writing my articles by creating a file in MS Word. I might work on an article for one or two days before I begin posting any part of it on Hub Pages. Doing this gives me time to edit and to collect photos. By the way, it's best to take and use your own photos, but if you can't, you should always visit Morguefile.com and commons.wikimedia.org to find photos that are free to use (always follow their instructions for use and attribution). Doing that will save you tons of time, and you'll probably find more photos than you'll need to tell your story. Hope this response helps you in some way, and good luck!

Thank you; and thanks for the info on finding illustrations.

You're welcome, of course, AMFredenburg. And remember, you can always save your articles "unpublished" while you're working on them. That way, no one sees it except you.

Thanks for mentioning Morguefile.com and commons.wikimedia.org to find photos.  Sometimes I can't find what I need in my array of photos.  I agree, it is a process, the elements are important too.

It doesn't pay to publish the hub until you've got your photos lined up and an extra capsules in place. But you absolutely can and should get started writing, especially if it's a big job. You can leave a hub partially finished in your lineup pretty much forever, and it doesn't get deleted unless you delete it.

However, if you publish without any images or other capsules, you're liable to rank poorly according to the new quality measures, and your hub may not get featured.

Yes, if I don't have some already started, that I come back to and work on, then they just sit in my document folder not getting exposure.

In my opinion, it is much more essential to ensure that the content of the hub is good first so you can defiantly keep adding to it over time because it will always have a probability of getting good traffic once it becomes featured. Photos and illustrations also have their advantages because it helps make the hub stand out a little bit more and attract more people to become hooked on the content itself. Between the two though, content is what I believe to be much more important and essential and the photos can always wait. You can always make your hubs a work in progress project even after it is published.

I love formatting the hub, with all the pictures, add blocks, quizzes and polls, etc.  sometimes more than writing the hub itself.  I agree, it doesn't matter if the story isn't any good.

I try to do mine as a continuous train of thought, of course I work as a graphic artist so I have a computer that allows me to whip up instant graphics and manipulate photos for better images, also because I'm a decent photographer and have over 6,000 of my own images to choose from I don't have to use other images but do when I get lazy.

It usually takes about a week for me to do my articles, because of research, links and time constraints and I'm a lazy artist type.

Haha, me too, a lazy artist type, as a graphic artist, I doubt that.  Good to know that mine taking a week or more is normal to some, sweet.

It also gives the moderators time to read it as it evolves . . .

I see nothing wrong with writing your text and publishing it on hubpages without photos, while you take more time to locate your photos. As a matter of fact, in my first year, writing hubs, I did this, on occasion, while I was learning how to become more proficient at constructing complete hubs.
I see not sense in pressuring yourself to do "more perfect work" writing hubs, without giving yourself time to learn to do "more perfect work."
Of course, this is just my view and world view about writing in general. Writing should be fun and not a "high pressure" situation.
    Take care.

First you know your hub itself has to be quality writing....it takes time to write and edit your hub and that is the first and most important thing to do.  However, one of the next steps, and one that helps to get views to your hub, is adding photos.  As drmiddlebrook said, they should be your own photos but if not you can use photos that are copyright free (freedigitalphotos.net or public domain photos).  If you are interested in seeing your hubscore rise, it is better to have your own photos.
Yes, this takes time but to have your hub put together properly and give it that polished look, it is better to wait until you have all the content you want, all the capsules you need and in the order you want, and all the photos you think will help make your hub a better read.  I think most good hub writers would agree it takes anywhere from two days to a week to put together a "finished" hub.

Hi, thank you all for your comments; so much really good advice! I would like to pick lots of "best" answers, but I picked the one who sent me to a site where I found a wonderful picture for my first hub:

I had fun writing this hub, and look forward to more.
