Where would you recommend getting an opinion on your work of fiction?
I'm one of those writers who loves to write but feels terribly awkward when someone else reads anything of fiction that I have written. Particularly if I know them. So I'm trying to find out where you would suggest submitting some chapters etc online to have them critiqued. I'm 21,000 words in...so I'm ready to have some of it looked at!. I'm not thinking of Hubpages though. Thanks in advance
Sign up to writing.com and post some of it. They are a great bunch of people over there.
I forgot about them! I've got an account that is like a million years old....thanks!
Drop me a line if you do post it there. I'm Amy Laverick or Nish Laverz over there. I'd be happy to take a look at yor work.
I posted the first bit. Will post a little more tonight. Am LilJak.
I would say that joining a writer's group is a good idea. I also ask friends of friend who don't really know me but are willing to read it and give an opinion. Sometimes people you are close with either say it's good when it's not to save your feelings. Feedback when writing fiction is important.
Right here is as good a place as any to get feedback for your fiction as well as your other articles. Or you could try writing at fictionpress.com or its sister site, fanfiction.net , both offer feedback. I like the fan fiction site best, but I haven't been active there lately.
Be careful with whatever you post publicly. Make sure you have either have a copyright or you've clearly read the site's information regarding anything you post.
For instance, posting on Facebook may seem like a great way to reach a lot of people and get instant feedback, but technically anything you post on their page becomes their property. So if push came to shove, you might find yourself in a legal battle that's next to impossible to win.
Writer's groups are good. Check your local Craigslist, even. Try to get into a writer's group that caters to your specific genre, so you get a proper critique.
And yes, writing.com is good, so is Writer's Digest. They're free to join and their writing forums provide really good, honest feedback in a very tactful way. No one gets on there and simply says, "This is crap." They provide constructive criticism and open discussion.
Submit your plot outline and finished chapters to a professional literary agent who knows the marketplace and knows what publishers want. Q.

If I want to get serious and try to publish, what would you recommend; poetry or short stories?I keep hearing that I should try to publish my work, but I really am just a novice hobbyist so I have no idea what would be the best direction to take. For now I am enjoying myself and I can be...

I have been part of writer's groups before and even hosted one once. I don't know if I ever got it right. I've been to writer's groups that are very specific and only cover things like screenplay writing. I've been part of groups that are so general nobody knew what the group was...
