I have done my own taxes for the past 5-6 years ever since I started using the online software from H&R Block. It is much cheaper than having a "professional" do it and I have better control over what I deduct, etc.
I actually just wrote a hub about this a week or two ago if you are interested at: http://okaygrace.hubpages.com/hub/Income-Taxes-and-You
I do my own taxes every year. On one occasion I took my return to a professional and the experience was not a good one. A couple of days after dropping off my tax information I returned to review my completed tax return with this "professional" in his office I soon noticed that he had forgotten to apply a "credit" which would in effect reduce my tax bill by $300. The tax professional looked across his desk at me and said "I guess I missed that one" and proceeded to hand me a bill for his services. Ever since that time I have done my own taxes.
Doing own tax calculations without consulting with experts may lead to some money problems as well as headache. So it's advisable to consult the experts.
I use to do it myself using the software and it was pretty cool, but since I am not an expert, I always felt that I might be missing something. I take mine to a friend, who runs a tax services business and he has been doing it for sometime now. He is certified and goes to all the new classes every year. I think it's easier since I don't have think about it. I just give him my information and i'm done. If I am concerned with something or am curious about certain deductions I ask him about it.
I do my own taxes. I actually worked as a tax preparer at H&R Block for a year. I didn't keep the job for a few reasons, but they have a really good course and I learned a lot about taxes so I feel comfortable doing my own. But if you don't know what you are doing, paying someone else who does is a better idea. Make sure you go to a good tax prep service though. H&R Block requires regular courses on tax law, there are other places that have a couple of hours on how to use the software and that's it.
II do my own and I do others. I am a partner in 3 national brand tax preparations offices.
Currently, every paid preparer has to have a PTIN to identify them to the IRS when they file a client's return. To renew for 2013, every paid preparer will have had to pay for an pass a written exam. They will also have to take continuing education courses. This should improve the quality and accuracy of all returns prepared by paid tax preparers.

Is it "safe" to get your taxes done for free by one of these local community organizations?I need to save money on getting taxes done this year and I am considering going to a local non-profit in my community that provides tax services to low and middle income people. Do you think these...

How do you file your taxes?Do you do them yourself? Use a software like Turbo Tax? Or do you take them to a professional? I heard that a professional can help you maximize your return. What are your experiences?

Do you prepare your own income tax returns or pay a professional to do it?I jsut went through the ordeal. We tried Turbo Tax this year, and the fee was only $65.00, as opposed to $300 to 400 for a non-CPA and who knows how much for one of those.

The Senator from Nevada, Reid, says a Bain Capital employee told him Mitt Romney did not pay taxes for 10 years. If this proves to be true, does this change anything? Won't some people simply regard Romney as more of a hero, wishing they could do the same thing.
