    Just under 80% of the staples that fill America's retail shelves move by truck.  In the early days much of that was done by rail and steam engines but it left a void between where the railroad ran and where man lived.  The wagon, then the truck, filled that void and slowly took a large portion of the volume based on flexibility of response and efficiency. Diesel fuel rises in price just like gasoline thus that increased costs eventually comes to consumers in the the way of price inflation on shelves.  The trucker passes it to the shipper, the shipper passes it to the retailer and the retailer to the consumer who stands at the end of the line. This same inflation shows up for us at the pump on gas prices and it also affects airlines, trains, buses, etc with the exception being that you get a fairly high volume of people moved with mass transit vehicles.  But when you move to mass transit you move back  to the original problem highlighted between the train and the wagon.
