Why has society become so polarized?
It seems that American society is becoming more and more polarized every day. What do you think is causing it?
It is not one thing but many things. Some contend that it is the current so-called Liberal political climate in America which are causing myriad racial & class divisions. There are those who assert that President Obama is causing a widening racial divide between people of color and Caucasian people. Some go even further to contend that President Obama is also creating a chasm between the wealthier & poorer classes by his socioeconomic programs & policies.
Then there are others who became enormously successful by their own efforts. They view the unsuccessful as lazy, even parasitical. It is their vehement content that if they are successful, why aren't others successful. Many wealthier classes view the poorer classes as draining the economy from their lack of effort & victimology mindset. They also maintain that anyone can be wealthy, especially in this time of growing opportunity. Conversely, there are those among the poorer classes who proclaim that they cannot succeed because the odds are stacked against them & "the man" is holding them back.
There are Conservatives who strongly portend that it is the Liberals who is creating a so-called degenerative society morally & socioeconomically. They further aver that it is the Liberals who are destroying the foundations which America was built upon. Liberals insist that America would be much better morally & socioeconomically if the Conservatives just get out of the way. They maintain that it is the Conservatives that are preventing America from fully realizing its dream for all.
Fox news and hate-talk radio.NOT kidding.
Respect went out the window with "FemiNasi" and "Pot-smoking,draft-doging philanderer-in-chief"
Just yesterday--Fox news conveniently left-out major parts of Obama's speech on re-play: in order to change what he said!
There is no honesty,no integrity,no respect for fellow human beings.
Play dirty--or get run-over.
This mind-set rules:"Anyone not like us is scum of the Earth"
For what it's worth, you're describing the Democratic liberals as well. All the political groups call people names and use only PARTS of the truth. I think both parties are virtually the same and both worthless to the American people.
Give me a liberal on tv who has deliberately changed an R presidents speech to demonize. Name 2 liberals on commercial radio talk, who spew the other side. Please, ill wait.
I'm not sure it actually is (more) polarized.
The typical person gets up, goes to work, comes home, eats dinner, spends time with their family, watches TV, and goes to bed.
The media is a "for profit" business model. Their goal is to get the highest ratings, highest number viewers/listeners, sell the most magazines & newspapers, or generate the most Internet click throughs so they can charge more money from their advertisers.
Therefore: "If it bleeds it leads!" Ordinary/typical events aren't "newsworthy".
If there is nothing shocking going on in your neighborhood or town they'll look for something in a nearby city, state, across the country or around the globe. Things that shock or cause fear and worry are the "top stories" and then they tag a "feel good story" at the end of the broadcast.
Perception is reality
You watch or listen to enough news stories and suddenly you think the whole world is going to hell in a handbasket! You ignore the fact there is NOTHING in (your life) family, on your job, or in your neighborhood to suggest things are "bad".
Ignorance is bliss
I bet if you went away on vacation to a tropical isle or even went to stay in a cabin up in the mountains for a few days with no TV, radio, newspapers, or Internet access you'd be shocked at how well you sleep and how good you feel until you came down the mountain and become inundated with all the "news" you "missed out" on.
Nevertheless no one advocate not being informed but it's important to keep things in perspective. Just because something is "newsworthy" does not make those isolated events the "norm".
On January 2, 2014 Time Magazine reported:
"The number of homicides in the United States’ biggest cities hit record lows again in 2013 as the murder rate nationally continued to drop to levels not seen since the 1960s."
(You wouldn't believe it by watching the news!)
The U.S. population is approximately 316.1 million. The vast majority of us are too busy living our lives to be concerned with hating other people. The (vocal minority) are the ones who make the news!
I don't know....just the other day,a co-worker and I had a discussion....ending with her screaming at me,"If you want socialism, move somewhere else!"...My mother says they can't talk politics in her building. On twitter, people call me names, insult.
Politics, race relations, abortion, gun control, and religion have always been "hot button" topics. The only thing that has changed is the Internet makes it easier to be anonymous. However the people themselves have always had these views.
Yes,but I can remember having them without being told to leave the country.
I believe the cause has spiritual roots. The strife we see every day is just a reflection of the strife we feel within ourselves. I believe that the increase in immorality has created a hostile environment where civility and honor are disregarded in an effort to win at all costs.
Another underlying cause of strife is the battle between light and darkness in the spiritual realm that manifested outwardly in society. Those whose works are evil will always hate the righteous, that's why Cain killed able. There's no doubt that darkness is on the rise in the world around us, you can see it on the news, in the way people speak ect... Therefore because the world is growing darker it's also easier to recognize those who are righteous because now they stand out. This alone can be a source of strife, but not necessarily a bad one.
Profound observation WBA. On the other hand, exactly what the Bible predicts.
I think you'll have to answer that for yourself.

What are the main misperceptions that Conservatives have about Liberals and why?

I'm always amazed at how many people don't understand Fox News. It has a successful business strategy of appealing to people's conservative biases, which is why a majority of viewers are conservative Republicans.Fox is not a news channel that seeks the truth. It provides reporting and commentary...

Commonly, those people who call themselves conservative hold socialism and communism as being the end-state of liberalism. I would argue that there is nothing "liberal" about socialism and communism. Think about it, the fundamental engine behind both is the need for the...

What makes you a Conservative or a Liberal?Did you make a choice based on your personal world views and ideals or did you follow the opinions of others based on race, culture, family or friends?

How do you guys feel about American involvement in Libya? I'm honestly curious and not trying to start a fight. How is this different than Iraq - other than not having troops on the ground? Have we "invaded" a sovereign nation? Was Saddam just as ruthless toward his own people as Gaddafi?...
