In August of 2007, I decided that I would become a mystic. I wanted to become someone who had direct experience with the supernatural realm, so I began studying astral projection.
Although to my knowledge no one has ever scientifically studied astral projection, it is the opinion of noted dream researcher Stephen LaBerge that people who are experiencing astral projection have, in actuality, trained themselves to sustain hypnagogia, the transition state between being awake and dreaming.
From my experiences studying and trying to learn astral projection, I agree with him.
That's not to say that it isn't worth pursuing or that the experiences of the person aren't meaningful just because they're not 'really' leaving their bodies. I'm an avid oneironaut (lucid dreamer), and I think my life is much better for it.
