   Unless the man is of Latino descent (somehow they pull it off with amazing ability) bold and colorful patterns are stigmatized with homosexuality or plain gaudiness. The reference to homosexual stereotypes is not a knock on those of that persuasion, simply put, gay men are generally more secure with themselves then strait men. Maybe because they are grown calloused to the looks, remarks, and judgments of others. Just a thought.

   You know I was thinking JUST that myself! Women have adopted practically everything from the men's wardrobe, and it seems that women's clothing comes in all kinds of cuts from modest and conservative to bold and daring (e.g. Backless cocktail gowns). But men's clothing for the most part is just... Meh. Sleeved shirts, suits and pants, and that's ALL we get for formal wear. It's so... restrictive! It's almost as if we are so horrified with the displayed male body that we feel it must be kept under layers and layers of clothing (this is one of the bummers of patriarchy; men decide how much skin everybody shows and unfortunately, straight guys don't want to see another guy's jhunk; hence the social unacceptability of men showing their skin in bold cuts) It almost seems that designers are not aware of the "male flapper"(guys like myself) who WANT to show a little bit more skin than is currently the norm for men! The men's department doesnt have any dressy sleeveless tops, unlike the women's section; it's only got wifebeaters, which frankly i think should not be worn any time after 7. This is the reason why many metrosexuals raid the women's department or tailor-make their own clothes: It's because they cannot find clothes that match their personality and help to express their bold and flirty style; men's clothes are all so... Regimental and one-track! (e.g. they make you look distinguished, e.g. suits and ties, long sleeved shirts, T-shirts and slacks,  but not "sassy" e.g. cocktail dresses/pantyhose). Note: I don't wear dresses or skirts, i'm not a crossdresser, just a guy who is for the most part not interested in what most of the menswear section has to offer. BOOOORING!  Which is why:

      I agree with you. I have a male pal who looks fabulous in any shade or colour of suiting material. One needs a good tailor though

   Most men are preoccupied with being taken seriously. Brooks Borthers and Ralph Lauren have been going to great lengths to try and sell red or green cotton chinos.
