Is social media killing human communication?
Eye contact has been limited to four-play, crossing the street has turned into a multi-task, acronyms have evolved from being abbreviations of words into being words themselves, and we now show our emotions through smiley faced icons in a virtual world. Are we turning into robots?
In a way yes social media has made it so that instead of actually getting up and going to hang out with your friends or family, you just post on their wall with a smiley face and that should be that. Hence why I think suicide rates have spiked because people are desperately lonely and feeling isolated. I actually wrote a hub on how Facebook can make you depressed: http://hubpages.com/t/2570fc
Nice answer NYC, I have a hub coming up about this too. I actually wrote a paper about this for my Comp & Lit Class and got an A on the first draft.
Evolution is taking place in human communication. I do have very good online friends, but have never met.
This is sad in many ways that people prefer computers over people. However it is good in that messages can be sent to many people at once.
I used to use a mail merge program to add in "what's happening here" and What has happened there. Then print out 50 copies, emptying my ink cartridge!
Abbreviations have often been common, even hundreds of years ago. Sadly, they mean different things to different people.
