   If I only had one day but could pick any place in Texas where should I go and what should I see?

   Having lived in Texas for many years, I can say that my favorite area is east Texas.  Longview, Kilgore, Tyler, Marshall...and my personal favorite- Arp (near Kilgore)--30 years ago, it was just a post office and general store....you blink, you miss it.
   
   While none of these towns have any grand tourist attractions, what they do offer is a realistic taste of down-home life in a small Texas town...Ya'll.
   
   Kilgore is known for a few famous people such as Van Kliburn the pianist and the Kilgore Rangerettes Drill team.
   
   Go to any of these towns on a Friday night during football season and enjoy one of the local high school games.  You will think you have stepped on to the set of "Friday Night Lights"...no kidding.
   
   If you want the touristy feel for Texas- Amarillo is the place to explore.
   
   Things to eat in while in Texas-(In CA we call this heart attack on a platter):
   Fried catfish, Hush puppies and Green Tomato relish
   Hickory Smoked BBQ of any kind
   Chicken Fried Steak and Gravy
   Biscuits and Gravy
   Fried Pies- Apricot is my favorite
   Deep Fried Turkey
   Fried green tomatoes
   Red Beans and Rice with a dash of hot pepper juice
   Fried Okra
   
   (are you seeing a pattern here?)
   
   Best time of the year in East Texas is dead of summer when it is so hot and humid you never stay dry.  The sudden rain storms are amazing.  The lightening bugs light up the sultry nights.  Sometimes you will experience a lightning storm that is fantastic. Tornado warnings can happen too- its all very exciting! I look forward to going back someday.

   You could do 2 or 3 Hill Country locations in a day.  I’d do Gruene, Wimberly and New Braunfels OR Johnson City and Stonewall.  If I had more time on either, I’d throw in Fredericksburg.
   
   Of the beaches, easy, I’d do Galveston.  They need the tourist business back, and I have been back.  You can see the historic houses that have survived the storm of 1900 and Ike:  Bishop’s Palace, Moody Mansion and Ashton House.  Maybe squeeze in some of Moody Gardens.

   Oh, a topic ever so dear to my little monkey heart.  As a native Texan, I have so many favorites.  I've written dozens of hubs on great places to see in Texas.  In fact, I noticed that all of the related hubs on the right of this screen are mine! One of my favorites is there, "Top 10 Wierd, Off-Beat Places to Visit in Texas". Since you only have a day, I'd have to go with the San Antonio area.  You have the Riverwalk, the Alamo, the Hemisfair Tower, Fiesta Texas, Sea World, and dozens of haunted hotels, and so much more!
   
   The best way to see Texas if you're not able to come to Texas and spend a little time, is to visit Texas on Google Earth.  I have lots of Google Earth hubs too, but I have one directly related to things to see in Texas.   
   
   Just this week, I've been accepted as the one of the Texas Travel Examiners for Examiners.com!
