What's the number one attraction you'd recommend to a first time visitor to Seattle?
I'm visiting the area myself right now! I'm not a local of the area but the biggest tourist attraction seems to be the space needle.
Pike Place Market, the oldest continuously operating Farmer's Market in the US, is a great spot for the whole family, and there's more than enough to both see and eat. And it's also near the Aquarium, where you'd catch a ferry to see Puget Sound, and part of the main downtown area, so you could also check out a handful of other major sights.

If you have a cloudy day, which Seattle gets a LOT, the Space Needle isn't worth doing.
I lived there for over five years in the late 70's and early '80's. Definitely go downtown and see the waterfront area. Eat the fresh fried Halibut at the dockside stands and tour the shops. Pike Place Market is a near place and of course there are plenty of coffee outlets. In the outlying areas checkout some of the restaurants that offer fresh salmon. I cannot remember the name of the place but several years ago there was a tourist type place near Tacome where they cooked the salmon filets on stakes that are leaned out over the open flames in a fire pit...fantastic. Mount Rainier is a nice trip if you have the time. The Space Needle is downtown and has a great view. North of Seattle is the St. Michelle Winery....a beautiful place and good wine. South to Olympia-Tumwater and you can tour the Olympia Beer Brewery and see the Tumwater Falls. Just pray for a sunny day! Enjoy!
I've lived here my whole life, and the 5 best places to go are the space needle, pike place market (get the donuts), the waterfront arcade (and dinner on the pier if with mixed company), the spaghetti factory, and take a ferry to bainbridge island and explore the little towns all around near the beaches. They're beautiful.
