A dyed-in-the-wool writer follows her calling on HubPages
1. Ulrike share with the reader what brought you into the world of writing and
eventually world of HubPages. We have all watched you grow into a well-respected
writer, which has been steadily drawing people to her hubs.
Well Rolly, I have always enjoyed writing. My mother shared this story with me a
while back. I was 3-4 years old when Mom, upon receiving a letter from her sister in
Germany, would give me some blue onion writing paper- some may remember this
paper- and a pencil. I would put the onion paper over top of my aunt’s letter and trace
her handwriting pretending I was writing! I would do it for hours; mother loved it, as
she would always know where I was. However, I would also take any scrap of paper and
scribble away, pretending I was writing a story. To say it has been a passion for me all
my life would be an understatement. I discovered the HubPages totally by accident on
FB. I peeked and was hooked.
2. What are your future writing plans, where do you see yourself in a few years here
on hub pages and in the professional writing world?
I plan to write, write, and write until God stops me. It is that simple. He has planted
the desire to share the imagination He has built in me. There is an energy that comes
from being obedient and sharing that which God has laid on my heart. I would like one
day to write a Christian Theology Book for middle graders. I have two middle grade
fiction books already under my belt, which are undergoing extensive editing. My writing
however is not limited to kids. I have a few projects percolating for adults as well.
As a new venture, HubPages has been very good, giving me a chance to expose my
writing to the greater public. It is continually amazing that I have readers from around
the world. The depth of readers adds a rich variety of perspectives and profundity to
many presented subjects. Moreover, the response from the readers has been terrific
and I have made a number of very good friends here. I would like to continue to share
and grow in the depth of my writing on the hubs, as well as encourage others to gain
greater confidence in their own gifting of words.
3. I see in your bio some goals which you have achieved in the past few years: skiing,
skating, and graduating with a degree. These are all great accomplishments. You say
that the word "can't" is not in your vocabulary. Can you share a little about this?
Rolly, experiences in life have shown that truly, if a person sets their mind to a thing
they can do it. With the confidence the love of God has grown in my personal life; I have
been able to overcome many obstacles life has thrown in my way. Truly, when there is
a solid foundation of truth and security to stand on, failure is no longer a fearful thing.
Instead, it becomes a learning platform and a stepping-stone to move ahead in the Lord.
I have also had the privilege of watching Dad live out this principal in his life. This has
been inspiration in and of itself. He, in his eighties, still tackles life with both hands.
4. Can you share with us a bit about what life has been like since you completed your
degree, where you have been, and where the future may take you?
In short, life has been on the road. We travelled across the states to the south-eastern
states in response to a call of God on our hearts. Working with the Rescue Mission in
Tennessee has forever changed our hearts, granting us the confidence and faith to
serve wherever God has us. After our six months in the USA, we travelled across Canada
spending time in virtually every province except Quebec and the Maritimes. For me the
plan is to use what God has given me in and through the College and write. I particularly
want to be open to any opportunities God opens for me to share His love and gift.
5. I know this is about Ulrike the writer but I think it important I ask you about your
husband and his recent accomplishment and where it may lead you as a couple.
Being in Tennessee was a matchless opportunity and experience for us both. While
there, God opened up the remarkable gift of song writing in my husband’s heart. Always
having been a worshipper this was truly an incredible and humbling gift for him. It has
been marvellous to sit together, writing in our own distinctive styles and voice in the
skill of word crafting for the Lord. Recently a song my husband wrote was nominated for
the 2010 Canadian Gospel Music Association Covenant Awards for Scripture Song of the
Year. Although we did not win the award, it was a great honour to make the finalist list.
6. You have mentioned your heart and passion is to write for middle graders as well as
adults. In what genre do you feel most comfortable writing?
I chuckled at this question Rolly; I have an eclectic personality and it shows in my writing.
I love a variety of genres and aspire to write in them all. I do write in both fiction
and non-fiction. Nevertheless, I must confess my favourite, if there has to be one, is
biographies, especially historical biographies. I love to read about the heroes of the
faith and am particularly interested in presenting the lives and truths of the early
Church Fathers in such a way that anyone could read from them and be encouraged. My
passion is to pass on the truth and reality of God to my readers of any age that they too
may one-day experience the joy and the knowledge of His presence and activity in their
lives.
