Training Collars
Of course we love our dogs. We don’t call them a person’s best friend for no reason. Our dogs give us company. They give us love. And they work for us too. Our dogs keep our homes, and the people in it, safe. They help us out, as guide dogs and companion dogs and hunting dogs. But the fact is, sometimes our dogs do things that we don’t want them to do. They bark too much or they won’t listen to our commands. Some dogs run away, even when we call after them. This can be dangerous for our dogs. And it can be dangerous when our dogs are overly aggressive with other dogs or with people. A misbehaving dog is a strain and can be unsafe.
When we have a dog that continuously misbehaves, even after many attempts to train it in the traditional ways, we often feel at a loss. We don’t want to keep shouting at our dog, and we don’t want to have to give it away because its barking bothers the neighbors or it keeps running off and getting picked up by the pound. There is a solution to many of these behavior problems, however. There are many kinds of dog training collars that can be an enormous help to dog owners. In fact, these training collars have come to the aid of many thousands of frustrated pet owners.
Types of Dog Training Collars
Dog training collars are designed to help out with many training difficulties dog owners have with their dogs. Whether your dog engages in nuisance barking, will not listen to commands or has a tendency to run off, or if you are a sportsperson and want to train your dog to retrieve waterfowl or other prey, there are dog training collars made for your particular situation.
Bark Training Collars
A dog that barks continually can be a real nuisance. This incessant barking disturbs you and your family as well as any nearby neighbors. The various bark training collars are designed specifically to teach your dog not to engage in nuisance barking.
A well known fact about dogs is that they do not understand punishment when it is given for something they did after the fact. You can only change a dog’s behavior if you catch them in the act. With nuisance barkers, this is very difficult to do. This is why bark training collars work automatically. The collar feels the vibrations of the dog barking and applies a negative stimulus on the spot, discouraging the dog from continuing to bark. In one type of bark training collars, the collar senses the barking a delivers a small electrical stimulation to the dog’s neck, about the same strength as a person receiving a shock while walking across a carpeted room. The shock is enough to startle the dog, however, and train it to stop barking. Other types of bark training collars emit a mist of citronella scent when the dog barks, which the dog finds unpleasant. A third variety emits a very high pitched sound upon barking that irritates the dog’s ears.
Shock Training Collars
Like many bark collars, shock training collars apply a light electrical shock to your dog when it engages in inappropriate behavior. The difference with shock training collars, however, is that the dog owner carries a transmitter that delivers the shock upon command. Thus, as soon as your dog misbehaves, you apply a shock to discourage the dog from that behavior. This immediate feedback is extremely effective in training your dog. What’s more, many of these shock training collars have various settings, so that you can deliver very mild shocks or those that are a bit higher in strength. Even the most badly behaved dog will begin to respond to your commands. This can be particularly effective for dogs who engage in dangerous behaviors like chasing after cars.
Sport Dog Training Collars
For those who want to train their dogs to retrieve and hunt, there are more advanced training collars that can be purchased. Like other collars, these training collars utilize small shocks to guide the behavior of sports dogs while in the field, everything from nicks, which are short bursts of electrical stimulation, to longer stimulations applied by the sportsperson at will. In addition, many of these collars emit beeps or other sounds that the dog has been trained to respond to. There are also silent vibrations that can be given to the dog at a distance to enact a desired action from the dog.
What all of these training collars have in common is the ability to train your dog in the way that is most effective: with immediate feedback. These training collars have been useful to thousands of dog owners all over the world. They can be a real lifesaver with a misbehaving dog too.
