My favourite breed of horse is the South American breed called the Criollo. I owned one myself for 18 years and he died at the ripe old age of 28. He was galloping with me on him the day before he died, and I think he could have gone on to live several years more if he hadn't been stricken down by colic.
Hundreds of years ago the Spanish travelled to South America with their horses and when they returned to Spain they left their horses behind. With no one to look after these animals, only the fittest survived, and these went on to become the breed that is today called the Criollo.
Criollos are very strong, long living, and intelligent. They are often bred with the English Thoroughbred to produce the typical polo pony.
