in a smaller cage?
Yes I'd imagine it would be harder to train them in a larger cage as they'd be more inclined to fly away from you. You'd have more close contact with them if they were in a small cage.
In general it's hard to train birds, so I 'waste your time getting a smaller or cage or anything, IF you have being rearing them since they were very young then you'll have a much better chance in training them.
