In the past my pets have been named for favourite writers or characters. I have cats called Arwen (LOTR) and Scout (To Kill a Mockingbird), rats called Basil (Fawlty Tours) and Rizzo (The Muppets), and fish named Oscar (Wilde) and Ernie (Hemingway).
I have gone away from that trend recently. My current cat's name is Shi-mi, which is Tibetan for cat, and the beautiful chocolate Lab you see in my profile picture is Rusty. He was already named when I rescued him.
