Do you have any advice for a potential beagle owner?
What should people know about beagles before having one for a pet?
They are hound dogs and will follow their noses. They also tend to bay, so make sure this is really the breed you want, especially if you live in an apartment.
Beagles like all other dogs are social creatures that need to live with you in your home, not outside, and need training with positive, non-punitive methods.
If you want a Beagle, make sure you look for a reputable breeder - one that only produces litters occasionally, has waiting lists, requires a contract, gets vet checks on the dogs, breeds for temperament and health, etc. Contact a kennel club for references.
Put your name on a waiting list at a local shelter for a Beagle or locate a breed rescue - there are a lot of nice dogs that need to be re-homed.
If you get a puppy, be prepared to spend the first 3-4 months socializing your puppy and making sure it gets off to a good start. If you get an adult dog, take some time off from work or get it on the weekend to be able to spend some time together before you have to go back to work on Monday.
Make sure you count in the cost of training, a crate, veterinary care, toys, bedding, etc. when you figure in your initial expenses.
