What's the best way to keep your neighbor's wandering dog out of your yard?
We seem to have this problem no matter where we live. The fix will increase your bills but it will work. Run sprinklers all day for 2 days straight. While you do this put tin foil around you yard. If your yard isn't too big thisshould be easy. Between the two you will scare off any animal thinking of coming to your yard. All of this is a last resort when communication fails but we've done it and it works. After the first time you just do it every couple of months.
I'm assuming you've already talked to his owners. Other than that, a fence or a meaner dog.
OK, my dog keeps going to the neighbor's dog. It got out of my leash or ran outside the door too fast but I'm chasing it and not letting it run loose because I don't care.
Every time the dog gets out, he runs like crazy to the neighbor's that has a fence in the back but is open in the front. By the time the dog goes all around to the front and runs to the backyard - I'm trying to catch the dog that is going crazy over the cat that lives underneath the mattress out in the yard.
Dog doesn't go nuts anywhere else except this one lady's place. Stuff happens. Please forgive me.
1) Talk to your neighbor about the problem, 2) Erect a fence.
I would yell at the dog, tell it to go home, possibly throw a small rock or stick at it or hit it with a broom. Also avoid leaving anything out that might attract him, like dog or cat food. The dog will get the idea pretty quickly that he is not welcome and avoid your property.
treat the dog with love and bring near to your yard..and suddenly make some instrumental annoying sound..enough to frighten the dog...i am sure the next time the dog sees you he will recall the past horrifying event and will never ever wander in your yard.
Thanks for the ideas!
I've heard of dryer sheets to ward off mosquitoes but didn't know the tin foil trick :{
Talk with the dog's owner first...they should know the proper way to discipline/handle their dog. If that fails, you may scold the dog, but in no way should you throw something or hit it. This will just create more problems between the dog and yourself.
I guess it depends on your relationship with your neighbor. If you are civil with each other, starting out with a polite and friendly conversation about it is prudent. If it continues to be a problem, you may have to start being more stern and forceful with your neighbor. Of course, accidents can happen...the dog could get lost, wander into your yard and your neighbor may be apologizing profusely.
Hopefully your neighbor is a decent human being and isn't ignorant. Otherwise, this could create unnecessary dissention and cause some discomfort no matter how you approach it.
