Baby kangaroos are born very small and weak. The mother can protect them in its pouch until they are ready to hop out on their own.
Because when the little kangaroos are born they are very weak and helpless, and could not possibly keep up with their mother, who moves in great leaps. So they are carried in the pouch until large and strong enough to look after themselves.
