It helps them in digest their food. Dogs are carnivores. Eating small amounts of grass provides the necessary fiber they need to help pass along the meat (or dog biscuits) diet they are on through the digestive system. B.t.w. cats do the same thing.
I've always been told that when dogs eat grass, it's because they are sick. It helps with their digestive tract.
I've noticed that my dog eats grass when she's sick to her stomach (it causes her to throw up whatever was causing the problem) or when she's constipated to 'get things moving along' again. In any case, it's to help her digestive system work (one way or the other).

Why does my cat eat grass? My cat chews on grass when I take him outside (yes he walks on a leash!). I don't know if he swallows it or not. I usually pull him away before he has a chance to swallow it. Is he missing nutrients?

Why do dogs eat grass? It seems that when Chipper has an upset tummy he will nibble on grass, I don't know if that is normal or not.

Why does my dog seek out and eat cat poop?I have a 12 year old red merl aussie. She had ALWAYS gotten into the litter box. Even though I have scolded her for this, she is very sneaky (as anyone with an aussie knows) and will get into it when I am not looking.
