Oil paints are the paints that I have least used over the years, in fact the only time I can recall painting with them was when I was in art college and I hated the white spirit or terpentine used to thin the paints down, the smell certainly put me off at the time, that was until I had the brilliant idea of buying a face mask doh....one of the Homer simpson moments I'm sure!
Although there may be some artists who use oil paints and never use commercial paint thinners like terps or mineral spirits to thin any of the paint down as they prefer to add the oils and work with it this way and scraping any excess off the painting surface as they go along, but I've always found that thinning certain areas of the paint creates some depth and life to yor paintings, even from the little experience I've had with oil paints in the last few months of getting back in to using them again.
I've always been particular about my oil paints, as they always have to be the brand Reeves for my oils, maybe because I'm used to painting with them, I don't know, but they produce some good results, they take much longer to dry than say Acrylics or Watercolors, but are a great painting medium that I want to certainly explore some more.
