What is an appropriate sewing machine for a novice sewer?
I'm hoping to find one that isn't so cheap that it won't do a good job, but isn't so high end that it would be a waste on a sewing newbie.
This is a great question. See bloggering here at hubpages for some suggestions. She has written a few hubs on that if I remember right. Otherwise I don't have an answer. Good luck on your quest!
I sewing machine is an investment. You will be tempted to purchase one for as little as possible, but you will only end up frustrated. I would recommend getting a 60s or 70s Kenmore, Singer or Vogue stitch and have it cleaned and services at reputable sewing machine repair or retail shop. Then after you using it, if you decide to stick with sewing, you can purchase a new machine. Personally, I prefer Huskvarna Viking, but Janome and Bernina are also good. Look for all metal parts.... no plastic, no aluminum.
