A good graphic manipulation and drawing tool

I'm in need of a good software tool that I can use for simple drawing, image manipulation, etc. And I don't have any money to spend. Any suggestions? I've seen GIMP which seems to be very powerful but also seems to have a high learning curve? Anything simpler.

Thanks for any suggestions you can provide!

I use Paint.net.   Very simple to use but also limited - however it does most things I need.

Yes Paint.net is great. I use it.

But recently, I use Windows 7's microsoft paint. This is really attractive and handy to use. You may give a try if you have a Windows 7 computer.

At sketchfu.com there is a free tool there to use and I highly recommend it! and you can figure out Gimp at your own leisure....

are there any that can be used on a mac? I get really frustrated because there seem to be loads of free downloads that are really useful - except if you have a mac...

I like GIMP myself. It may seem a little complicated but one you start playing with it you will get the hang of it.
