What questions would you ask or what would you recommend to look for when buying a used car?
When in the market for a used vehicle, are there certain makes and models that are better than others? It would be helpful to know what makes/models have lower cost for maintenance and repair. For example, I bought a used Lincoln Navigator and found that tires, and mechanic repair cost more than other models. What advice would give to someone in the market? Will you write a Hub about it?
I bought a used Honda, because they are the best for low cost maintenance over the life of the car. From what we've learned after buying several used cars is that the first thing to consider is the seller. There are ways to find out in a community who is a honest seller and/or dealer of used cars. The used Honda I bought was from someone I knew was of honest character and who had all the maintenance record paperwork from the time he bought it new. We could see exactly what the life of the car had been like up to this point. The more you know about a used car deal, the better.
First I'd ask how many people have owned it, and are those the actual miles? People used to work on the odometer and falsify the miles on cars and I think it made them some money. Probably a crime now, which it should be. What kind of oil does it need for the best mileage and performance. Important has it ever been wrecked? There are many more things to be concerned about but these are at the top of my list.
the only question you need to ask is not to the person selly the car but is to your self, is where do i find someone i can pay a perfessional company that can look over the for you.
there are lots of companies that do this. they will give a full report on the car from tire condition to brake pad condition every good and bad thing with the car. they will give there opinion if it is worth buying.
these companies should charge anywhere from 100 to 300 for a report.
go and look at all the cars you like find the one you want make sure you find the person selling the car honest and if you like the car tell the owner you want to get some to check the car out and if they say go for it they have nothing to hide if they try and talk you into buying it there and then walk away they have something to hide.
i hope this helps
Whether private or dealer you will want to know is the mileage average. How many owners has the car had as too many means something is adrift. Does the car have a documented service history and make sure you see and check it. Walk round the car and look, really look for dents, scratches, colour mismatches indicating accident damage. Check the tyres, how much life in them.
There is so much to know that if you can take a mechanic with you,
MJ.

What should you ask when you're buying a second hand car from a private person?

I bought a new Honda crv in 2003 and still drive it.I have only spent $2000 for normal maintenance, not counting tires. I see many people in my town driving older cars and wonder how long people on here have owned and drive their car that they bought new?

What was your first car? Some people had the benefit of going big on the first car. Others go more modest. Which way did you go? Would you recommend it?

I am looking to get a new car, but I want to know what things I need to look for when I test drive it and what questions I should ask the seller after I test drive it.
