Depends on what kind of "performance" you're looking for? Straight-line acceleration (drag racing), cornering/handling (road racing), on-road/street (D.O.T. legal) or track/strip? Also depends on the specific vehicle- i.e. muscle car, sports car, stock or modified, etc.?
There's a wide array of manufacturer's and types. Personally, I've always liked Falken for a street driven sports car. In my opinion, one of the most under-rated tires out there.
For a street driven muscle car application, you can't beat the tried and true BF Goodrich "radial T/A". Good price, good all around performance, and they just have the right look.
