    Walking backwards doesn't make us live longer. The miles still take their toll on a car. Whether it's forwards or backwards, it all adds up.

    The Odometer is made to go forward not back.  It is made with a clog system which means every clog has a notch set in with a clip that comes down once it has passed a clog.  Therefore it will not go backwards.  The older model of cars had a lead which attached to the odometer.  This could be removed by just winding it off so then you could drive without the miles traveled showing up on the odometer.  Today the modern vehicle has the cable welded in place so it can not be removed.

    A cars engine goes the same way whether going backwards or forwards. The feed shaft into the gearbox goes the same way whether going forward or back. A car is made to go backwards through a selection of gears between this and the drive shaft. The odometer feed is taken before this reverse gearing comes into play.

    the analog meters did subtract miles/kms ...
    as the others mentioned the gearbox is still working when going in reverse so the digital one doesn't subtract anymore.
