Should race car drivers (Nascar, Indy Car, etc) be considered as athletes?
It is now a huge money-making industry but it is not a sport. I have always thought that they should not be considered athletes as they are not exerting calories controlling a horse, running around a track or field, skating (figure or hockey), golfing, playing tennis, swimming, etc.
A machinist may be a better title, I'm sure to tick many people off with that.
If one consider a race car driver an athlete then the word athlete goes meaning less. They are just drivers. They cannot do anything without cars. But athletes are different. They dont need any machinery like those driver do.
