What are the advantages of 5 point seat belts over 3 point seat belts?
Why do they only provide just simple 2 point seat belts in airplanes?
The 5 point seat belt has five straps - 2 straps at the shoulders, 2 straps at the hips, and 1 strap at the crotch that connects to a buckle. The 5 point seat belt offer increased safety as compared to a 3 point seat belt. 5 point seat belt is ideal for children or passengers in very fast moving vehicles where the wearer has limited control of his/her momentum in case of a sudden change of velocity. Maximum comfort in a vehicle is achieved when you don’t wear a seat belt. The more the number of points in a seat belt the greater the safety and the less the comfort. There has to be a certain sacrifice for comfort in favour for safety. The 3 point seat belt is the ideal beat for increased safety and acceptable comfort. 2 point seat belt is not safe enough as it’s known to cause separation of the lumbar vertebrae and paralysis in case of severe accident.
