What is article marketing?

Some of you may have heard the phrase 'article marketing' whilst researching ways to promote your website or online business, and you may be wondering what exactly article marketing is. If this is the case then you have come to the right place. The aim of this Hub is to explain what article marketing is in an easy to understand way without overloading you, the reader, with indecipherable jargon.

According to Wikipedia the definition of article marketing is as follows: "Article marketing is a type of advertising in which businesses write short articles about themselves, their company or their field of expertise as a marketing strategy. A primary style for the articles includes a bio box and byline (collectively known as the resource box) about the business." (Source: Wikipedia.com)

Article marketing is really quite easy to understand because it pretty much does what it says on the tin. The idea is that you use articles to promote your website or online business. To better explain this often confusing term I will give you a for example to follow.

Imagine you are the owner of a website that sells designer pet collars. Your websites URL is www.designerpetcollars.com. You want to get lots of traffic to your site in order to sell lots of designer collars and make lots of money, the problem is you do not have a lot of money to spend on advertising. With this being the case you do some research and find out about article marketing. You read up all you can about this amazing and effective method of promoting your website. You start writing lots of articles that are within the same niche as your website, so you write articles about designer collars and articles about which collars are fashionable for dogs this summer etc.

Once you have written a bunch of articles you then publish these articles to article directories such asEzinearticles.comand similar (you could even publish some of those articles to Hubpages.com). As you submit your articles to these article directories you place within the article a link to your website. People will read your articles that are about designer collars and then hopefully they will decide to check out your website to see what kind of designer collars they can buy from you.

The reason article marketing is so effective is because people love to read articles about the things they wish to know more about because articles pretty much summarize the information and break it down into easy to read and more manageable chunks of information. They also like the fact that the articles often point them in the direction to finding more information about their desired topic. Another reason that article marketing is so effective is because articles when well written provide high quality back links for websites. This means that those websites that the articles are pointed at get a better ranking from Google. The main aim of every website owner is to get their website onto the front page of Google in order to get maximum exposure for their website. The more high quality back links there are pointing to your site the higher up Google ranks your website.

To to conclude article marketing is an effective marketing method for website owners who are promoting their site on a shoe string budget.

Article marketing is also known as 'bum marketing'. Bum marketing is so called because it is said that even a bum can do it and make money from it.
