GOLDEN GATE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION, 1939
Treasure Island began its history as a WPA (Works Progress Administration) man-made island built circa 1936 - 1939, ultimately for the US Navy inside the city limits of San Francisco in a gear-up operation toward World War II indsutrial and defense activities. The island community was, indeed, named after the famous author Robert Louis Stevenson's novel of the same name. It was the site of the Golden Gate International Exposition that celebrated the grand bridge in 1939. Famous fine arts sculptures and murals largely disappeared at fair's end, but some remain on the island, while a search is on for the remainder. A large set of cubist elephants had formed a "Gateway to the Pacific" on the island.
SF Airport Terminal located a Pan Am Seaplane terminal on the island for flights to the Pacific and the Far East for several years. Afterward, unlike many other "world's fair" types of sites, the island was put to effective use as a US Navy Air Base in 1941.
Beginning in the year 2000, plans took form to transfer the island to private concerns and local residents. As of 2009, 1000s of new residential units and several new businesses are in planning stages for the island, with an eye toward increasing economic growth and attracting even more tourist trade and special events rentals.
The well known John Muir Charter School has operated on the island since 2005 to good effect. It provides alternative education and Youthbuild Construction Trades training to people ages 16 - 24, under a federal initiative, who wish to complete a high school diploma or GED certificate and find employment soon at a living wage. This type of grant-funded project has seen success in larger cities like Chicago, Illinois and Columbus, Ohio. Well trained and qualified staff and administrators are key to this success and John Muir possesses these, along with sound programming that works.
Sine 2006,Lennar company has been working to develop a self-contained city on the island and a ferry boat system. Residential and commercial properties are available and increasing in numbers. Several commercial buildings are available and properties above the Yerba Buena Island Tunnel have also been placed on the market.
Residential, the island offers rental properties only and is home to about 2,000 individuals. John Stewart Company Treasure Island Villages provides 100s of townhouses and flats with several amenities. Over and above this, the Treasure Island Homeless Development Initiative maintains high quality housing for individuals that must rely on supportive services. Youth programs and health services are also part of this latter group of housing opportunities. These dwelling programs for the less fortunate and successful, because supervision and follow-up are thorough and regular. No inner-city or urban decay has taken a toe-hold.
Annual Events on the island are well planned, draw many visitors, and include the San Francisco Triathlon, the Treasure Island Music Festival, the Summer Sailstice (a Solstice celebration at sea), and the San Francisco International Dragon Boat Festival. The dragon boat festival combines ancient seamanship and building techniques with a modern celebration that people especially enjoy.
In addition to all this, the island maintains its Great Lawn of about 127,000 square feet for rental to hold special events. A nearby interdenominational chapel is available for any type of religious ceremony, including weddings and most other religious rites of all faiths. In all of these features listed above, Treasure Island is a well maintained multicultural community, events hub, and tourist attraction.
