Are there any good, inexpensive alternatives to selling on Amazon.com?
For items sold on Amazon.com, Amazon charges 15% plus $1 (even more if the product is a book or type of media). Ebay also charges a significant fee. While Craigslist is free, it is often seen as sketchy. Are there any other alternatives for selling textbooks, used items, or homemade products online?
Homemade items can be sold on Etsy but I don't know about the rest. There is a site called yardsellr and that is not a typo it is yardsellr.
You could build your own website and use PayPal (or another form of payment alternative) to collect fees. You can also set up at local flea markets or other public gathering that is similar in nature. You can host a craft fair and sell your products there too.
Wix hosts free websites as an alternative to paying for one through a host such as GoDaddy.

On the amazon associates blog it states that the first month will credited to you of 39 dollars and then you will be charged the normal rate of 39 dollars after that. Am I getting this wrong? I thought selling through amazon was free?

Does anyone know or have you sold items on Amazon? I have a lot of books on the craft of writing and several best sellers that are just kind of sitting here and I thought this might be a good way to get them gone plus make a little pocket change to boot.
