Being a part of Quality Assurance in a company is in itself a testing and trying role to play. Most definitely the QA Manager has to be strong enough to believe what he/she is doing and stand by their role description and the QA principles.
Trust me I have been part of the QA and auditing team and it had been a trying experience, but on the other hand gave the motivation to break the wrong illusion about QA. Generally other department colleagues think that QA is only existing to enforce on them stricter rules and find problems in everything they do so it is better to hind facts from them. The QA manager has this uphill task before them to change this notion, to build a healthy relationship with other departments, while still ensuring that their QA department is working independently without being influenced by others while doing their job.
The QA Manager also need to be the guiding force, encouraging their team to work on, learn and teach, motivate and be there as their support system. QA Managers should be able to communicate and connect very well; not just with their team but with other employees as well. This is important as miscommunication can cause a lot of problems and to maintain a good quality system effective communication is important. If the QA manager is unable to communicate their needs to other department heads then they can surely forget about the message getting to the employees. Nearly all Quality documentation goes through a review by the QA Manager and they need to ensure that all instructions are clear to be followed without any misunderstanding by the staff.
I would say that a QA Manager's role is full of stress. Only a person with a strong will and good years of experience should apply for such roles. Everyone once in a while looks towards them for answers and they should not balk then. They should be of strong personality which has a mix of the helping kind. I thankfully was under the guidance of an amazing QA Manager and I will always respect her for being there for us
