What happens to the thousands of items in thousands of stores that does not sell?

Whenever I shop I can't help but wonder how could so much merchandise actually sell?  It's mind boggling.  And, if it doesn't sell, then what happens to all of it?

If it doesn't sell, there are retailers who buy that kind of merchandise in bulk and resell it at a discount such as "Big Lots"

It will go to outlet stores, and in some cases, donations.  A lot of children's and women's shelters get the majority of their items from merchandisers looking for a last-minute tax write off.

However, American business is not philanthropic by nature, and the majority of it goes to warehouses where it will slowly be sold at cost (or very near it) through outlets everywhere.
