Great question. Many a time I interviewed for one job and was successfully referred to another job. When I first graduated with my Masters I was advised to go to EVERY job interview - even if you don't want the job - the practice is great and the connections - well you never know.
One job was 2 hours away in dense Chicago traffic - I was kicking myself for the investment of 4 hours and allot of headache but it paid off - I was one of the top candidates and was referred to the job of my dreams.
