How do smart, educated women balance career and children?

I think balance would be to put children first. You can always bounce back into your career, even if you are at the peak of it, but first moments (first steps, first words, first day of school) and even lasts events are moments you can never get back. Schedule career and education around children as opposed to scheduling children around education and career. When women are at the peak of their education and career, they never get recognition for being a great mom. But when women present themselves as a mom first, they are highly appreciated as great examples for work and the academic community

I agree with all of the above, jatubracewell -- but I think that many educated women feel reluctant to put a successful career on hold once they become moms (for financial reasons, career aspirations, student loans, prestige, perceived lack of stimulation / social interaction at home, etc).  It is a very difficult situation to be in.  I went part-time with the birth of my child, and am currently trying to decide whether or not to stay home. I know that any decision I make will have its own challenges.  Thanks for your perspective on this as it reinforces my beliefs as well! smile

I work from home whilst the kids are at school or asleep.

I work part-time teaching, and work online at night when my kids are sleeping.  You can never get the time back with your kids, so enjoy watching them grow.
