"New Google algorithm"
I think what your talking about is Google Places, a few months ago Google introduced a new service called Google Place Pages, basically it has created a 'Place Page' for every business in the western world and placed each place page on a map 'Google Maps' where that business is physically located.
Keep in mind Place Pages and Google Maps is localcentric and is ultimately designed to be used in conjunction with a smart phone.
The idea is if you search for a product or service through Google, the search engine will decide if the search is localcentric, if so it will get GPS data from your smartphone and provide local results for your search query on Google Maps.
