Yes. My mother is a coder. They make good money and can do their work from home. They send the codes and recieve the files by email or regular mail. It is just as efficiant and they are paid by each code.
You can, though many hospitals and clinics prefer that you work in their building for a short time until they get to know you, and then most are open to letting you do it at home. That said, there are also growing numbers of people looking for coders on freelance marketplaces and such, and these are all done from home.
