Did promotion bring you the happiness you thought it would?
Have you ever felt being promoted is a mixed experience? Do you feel you have left behind the things you loved about the job in the first place.. Or is it merely taking the time to love new responsibilities?
There is a saying around my company...take the job and in a year, tell me whether you got a promotion. People in general desire to have particular jobs because they envision them to have power, freedom, and opportunity. When they get into the job, they cannot find those things and neither could the guy before them. All they see then is the accountability and the responsibility thus the increase in pay soon wears thin because they really are not interested in the job content. Too many of us have the wrong definition of success. True success is not about titles and going up the ladder with ever-increasing pay...though those things are nice. True success is identifying the job you want and understanding what makes it up then aspiring to that position. You desire the job first and foremost because it is interesting to you. Once you find that formula, success, in its own way, will find you and you will be quite happy with the outcome. WB
