How to Stay Awake During Night Shift?
I recently accepted a job working late at night until early morning. I am not sure how to adjust to this change. What are the best ways to stay awake and alert during this shift? Any suggestions or advice is appreciated.
It is very difficult to work the overnight shift. Even if you've done it for a long time it's hard to get used to. The best thing is to just really get as much sleep as you can during the day before your shift. The next best thing is to drink lots of water periodically and eat snacks that might give you a bit of energy. Try bananas and nuts. Coffee only goes so far but it definitely helps. Try stretching every so often as well to get your blood circulated. That should give you a bit of a boost.
My husband suffers from this issue as he works nights as well. I have learned that when you set yourself on a set schedule, your body handles lack of sleep much better. When you are on a rollar coaster sleep schedule, your body doesn't function well and even the sleep you do get doesn't seem enough.
Weekends (or whatever your days off are) are more difficult as you want to be social during those times like most of the rest of the world, but by Sunday, your exhausted and haven't slept all day to prepare to go back to work because you slept all night Saturday night. It really seems like a vicious cycle but like I said, figure out a good sleep schedule and you will get the best and most fulfiling sleep.

Would you prefer working the day or night shift?I currently work the night and have been for about 7-8 years, and I love it. My reason being is that I can get more things done as far as appointments for myself and my children. I do not have to use up my vacation days. But there have been times when...
