SALARIES and WAGES in America

   There are those who complain about a "living wage".  However, salaries & wages are commensurate w/one's educational & skill level, not to mention what is in demand.   There are some instances when pay is solely dependent upon one's appeal & popularity levels i.e. celebrities.   Why do some people complain about a living wage, given that they don't have the educational nor skill levels to garner adequate salaries & wages?  Why won't they realize this- people are paid according to education, skill, & demand level.   People are also paid according to job complexity.   A simple job such as clerking, being a cashier, laborer & waiting aren't high skilled job hence the pay whereas a complex job such as computer analysis is a complex job hence the higher pay.  Your thoughts on this?

      Because they want more money for doing what they are already doing.  Because they want wages determined by need rather than value of work performed.  Because they don't want to compete with others for a higher wage - competition for product prices is wonderful, not so much when it's for the speakers labor.
      
      There are lots of reasons.

            Have the new minium wage gone up to $15. Last time I look it was $7.25.
            $15 would be a livable wage.

               Would it?  Even before the inevitable inflation, would people not almost instantly demand more, complaining they cannot live (as they wish) on $15?
               
               $7.25 is already a "livable" wage, after all...just not in the luxury wanted.

                  Exactly.  If people want more, they should strategize i.e. get the skill set for the job/career that they desire.  However, MOST people DON'T want to sacrifice to attain a specific goal.  It is MUCH EASIER to complain that they don't have a "livable" wage.  They bemoan that they are struggling but they WANT to struggle.  To reiterate, poor people in America LOVE BEING POOR.

               Castlepaloma, minimum wage jobs exist because such jobs require a very low educational  &/or skill level.  Also such jobs are stepping stone jobs.  Minimum wage jobs aren't meant to be life jobs.   One takes a minimum wage job, get the skills, & MOVE ON.   If one doesn't want a minimum wage, get the education & skills as to NOT HAVE A MINIMUM WAGE JOB.

                  When I was growing up as a young man. Minimum wage jobs, you could start paying for a small house.
                  
                  This new generation the vast majority pretty well know they wont be inheriting a house or means of earning it.
                  
                  With the covid it drags all us down to the lowest energy level ever except record breaking wealthy . For me personally, I've been well prepared for these zombie & robot times. As covid increase with vaccine roll outs. I get to watch my new youth generation struggle much worst and the older die off of loneliness and less health care.

      One’s education level is one thing. One’s skill level may be another thing. For example, suppose someone is an experienced and very good clerical worker or caregiver. Suppose that person hasn’t much education, but they are awesome at what they do. Perhaps they did not understand math or did not finish high school. Or maybe they never received the positive feedback needed to understand their worth. I believe their jobs should be given a certain amount of recognition and worth. I believe such workers deserve cost of living raises... even if those wages only add up to .50 cents per hour per year.
      I guarantee you, such good and humble workers, who are the salt of the earth, appreciate any kudos they receive, which are far and few between.
      No one should look down on any “common worker” unless a particular worker is lazy. (I have no patience for lazy employees.)
      Some people really do not have the ability to take advantage of various opportunities which exist in this world. They may have learned about them too late. They may be depressed or sick. I know this all too well because my own mother worked like a dog to feed and clothe her two children. All the while, she dealt with debilitating depression and chronic illness. In her case, there was no time for an “education.” That being said, she managed to get some certificates of learning. She also died at the young age of 60.
      
      But back to current matters regarding the poor.... Joe Biden’s push for the a $15.00 minimum wage is absurd and will backfire in our faces. Why? Because business, and especially small businesses, will be forced to cut full time hours for low income workers to half time and less. Those businesses will likely have to close up shop once and for all.
      
      So much for the needed job the low wage earner was grateful to have.
      
      So much for the compassion of Progressives, who are adept at making decent worker’s lives much less sustainable than they had been by forcing businesses to go out out-of-business and by making poor people poorer.
      
      
      The lyrics from a song comes to mind with regard to the callousness of the Biden administration: 
      
      “Fashionably sensitive, but too cruel to care.”

         It's true - liberals never seem to understand even the most basic of economics from the business owner's point of view.  Only from the point of view of the endless pockets of the taxpayer, from whom they take whatever they wish and then borrow more.

            Right. And sadly, Democrats in power want to keep poor people poor and dependent on the government forever. Race baiting, in particular, is the favored method for securing their personal power and the endless flow of money for themselves. It’s sickening, to say the least.

      Seems the problem today is that people can make more money staying home and collecting unemployment, or whatever federal benefits they are collecting, than working.
      
      Why go to work for even $15.00 an hour, when you can make the equivalent staying home and doing nothing?
      
      If you are collecting benefits you don't have to pay for gas to get to work, or pay for work clothes, or child care, etc.
      
      On a side note, it is interesting how since Biden has been elected all of a sudden we are having all these gas problems, price of gas has never been higher in places like CA, while other States can't get any.
      
      And as gas prices go up, so will the prices of other things, and so will the cost to go to work... for some people, it won't be worth the drive.

         Gas prices in the area I lived peaked at $8.07 per gallon during the Obama era, but usually teetered around 6-7 bucks. Granted this was a very wealthy area of CA, and I don't know what the reasoning behind the prices were because no one ever documented it except to complain on social media; concisely, I've seen way higher but it's still early in the term.

               Dear Grace... Always a pleasure to hear from you. I will say that even some Progressives I know, are personally alarmed with Biden’s policies with regard to the Border crises and his (and Kamala’s) lack of attention there of...
               But at this juncture, I do not know that he is responsible for rising gasoline prices, as our astute friend, Ken Burgess has intimated. (Although I would not be surprised)
               
               Apparently, there is this thing of hackers demanding ransom for various domestic problems... to include gasoline supplies in the U.S., according to the WSJ.
               
               Still looking into it.

               All I've heard is that it came from Russia, but that there is no indication that the Russian government was involved or indeed that any Russians citizens did it.  Meaning they had traced the signal to Russia but had no idea of who was doing it.
               
               Wonder if we'll ever know?

      I think people need goals to thrive. It took me a long time to realize this. If you get what you want too easily, and without working for it, the thing you wanted doesn't seem as special. You don't get the euphoria you would get had you achieved something on your own. The smaller euphoria along the way, from the little goals it takes to get to something big. No pride in yourself. No resiliance, no persistence, no bravery from taking chances. No learning experiences, no making yourself a better person.
