Making Money with Hubpages after 50 Hubs

Updated on November 4, 2013

I have been on hubpages for little over a year. The experience has been magnificent. I have made some very important connections. The friends that I have made on this web 2.0 property have turned out to be a positive motivating factor in my life. The poems, articles, videos and controversial hubs published have been most entertaining so far. Logging into hubpages has given me the ability to gain insight and information regarding different cultures and belief systems.

Hubpages provides an avenue to share your thoughts, get social support, make friends and learn something new. The social community on this platform may be the largest of its kind. It is very easy for someone to reach out to others who share similar ideologies. I do not think there is any other writing platform that provides such a large interactive community of strong writers.

Random Friends on Hubpages

The person who encouraged me to continue Hubpages when I just started is Cardisa. She is a big deal within the writers social community. She has helped to develop my writing skills and even helped with some of my hubs. The fact that she is Jamaican like myself is also a big bonus.

I have only met one hubber, Rastamermaid in person in Montego Bay. This is her version of the meeting: Interview with a Rasta. This is my version of the encounter: Rasta1 Interviews RastaMermaid in Montego Bay

The followers on hubpages are also very loyal. The social community will bookmark and help to promote your hubs for nothing in return. Therefore, it is very possible to make money with hubpages by the traffic generated by its social community alone. Furthermore, once your hub becomes popular amongst your followers and friends, Google follows through with more traffic.

I have written 50 Hubs, Now What? I am Going to Write More

After 50 hubs, I am pleased with the amount of money I have made with hubpages. It is nice to wake up and see money in my Google adsense account. My earnings seem to rise steadily over time. For the first half of this year, my average earning per month with hubpages is $12.68. My earnings for the month of January 2012 are more than all the money I made in 2011 (less than a dollar). I am pretty sure that my earnings for January 2013 will be more than all the money that will be made in 2012.

I have only used Facebook and Twitter to promote my hubs recently. I have little or no backlinks but it will come naturally. The best strategy is to have followers on other social platforms and then bookmark there. Those followers will in turn share and bookmark the hub. It is obvious that Google responds to social signals. However, strong content is king. Over 85% of my traffic comes from Google. Below is a table showing my Hubpage earnings for the first half of 2012.

It is obvious that I complete approximately one hub per week. This indicates that I have not been putting in the necessary input that I had planned earlier in 2012. After much procrastination, I am still being awarded for my limited input.

Improving My 50 Hubs and Moving Forward

Before moving forward with publishing more hubs, there is some little house cleaning that needs to be done. I really did start writing as a hobby. My previous hubs need to be optimised. Below are all the changes that will help me to become more professional. There is strong evidence to indicate that these are the changes that will bring more traffic and help to make more money on hubpages.

1. Change Pictures

Some of the pictures that are presently on my hubs do not belong to me. I have no idea of the sources. Therefore, one of the 50 hubs milestone tasks is cleaning up my picture gallery. I will try to use only creative commons or my own personal photos. One of my friends who is twelve years old was browsing my hubs asked me about my pictures. I told him I got them from all over the place. The kid then said, “It would be a lot cooler, if you had taken all the pictures”. At that point I realized I had missed out on a great opportunity to share my personal pictures.

To better understand creative commons, fair use and picture copyrights, consult the hub video Understanding Copyright Infringement & Using Creative Commons on your Hubs

Given the introduction of Pinterest, it is even more important to use creative commons or photos that are not intended for commercial use. The first photo on your hub should be optimised for sharing and distribution (re-pinning). In order to properly setup my pictures for general social picture sharing, I have consulted the hub How to Generate Traffic Using Made For Pinterest (MFP) Images.

2. Spell check

I am from a background of mathematics, programming and electronics. I have always been a strong reader but not a strong writer. English literature is a new art to be mastered. The only option is to do some online grammar courses to sharpen up my word skills. All 50 hubs will be re-evaluated for grammatical and punctuation mistakes.

3. Inter-Linking Hubs

It is embarrassing to say that not all of my hubs are properly interlinked (blogroll). Google loves when you have multiple hubs targeting similar keywords or hubs that refer to similar topics. This will also increase the views of other weaker hubs that are related to your best hubs.

It is best to use the “group” option in hubpages to group similar hubs. This enables your viewer to easily browse your hubs. Placing hub links in or at the end of your article is also ok. There is also the option of creating a hub that is a directory containing links to all niche related hubs.

4. Seo keywording

Search engine optimization is the bread and butter of making money with hubpages. Learn to use the Google keyword tool. This is basically setting up your hub using a format that the search engine loves. This format includes using the keywords that people will use to search for the information that you are offering. It is also best to use low competition keywords. The keywords that have the highest CPC (cost per click) are the best for earning money with hubpages. Only 20 of my hubs are keyword optimized.

5. Backlinks and sharing all

In addition to Facebook and twitter, I will be adding several other social bookmarking sites. These social bookmarking websites only work if you are actively promoting and reading other random works. I try to stay away from automated or paid backlinking schemes. The only way to get feedback from social sites is by being social. It is important not to spam your followers.

Guest blogging is the best option for providing solid natural backlinks. However, I will not be able to use this option in the best interest of time. Using social or micro blogging platforms for backlinks are just as effective as guest blogging. Getting backlinks from comments and forums will not be effective unless you are an active member of that platform.

6. Monetizing (amazon)

My best hub did not have an Amazon capsule. It is ridiculous, how much money I missed out on. Google Adsense is dynamic and automatically targets prospective customers. Amazon targeting has to be done manually. Everyone knows that it is best to sell products from Amazon that is related to your hub. It is also nice to actually have a climax point near or around an Amazon ad. I may have to spice up the punch lines of my recent articles right before an Amazon ad.

7. Find more topics from within previous articles

Before you can start fishing for high paying keywords, the topic has to be determined first. These topics may be just some bullet points from your best hub. It is beneficial to write a full hub about a topic that you only touched on in your previous hub.

It is important to use a keyword to refine your topic into a Title. Therefore, some of my best titles are already in my previous hubs. This gives an opportunity to expand the scope of your niche while staying on point. This is also a solid method to interlink similar hubs.

8. Google Analytics (look for keywords)

There are a lot of ways to use Google analytics in non-traditional ways. One way of doing this is by tracking the keywords that are used to find your articles. Some of these keywords are used so often to find your article that it makes sense to do a separate hub targeting that keyword.

For example, I did an article about theThe Uses of Aloe Vera in Jamaica. Then it became obvious that most of the people that came to my site were really using keywords containing aloe and acne. I then wrote an article about Does Aloe Vera Help Acne?. It turned out to be my most popular hub.

9. Copyrights and Disclaimers

I have never checked to see if my hubs ever got stolen. I really didn't until now. I have heard rumours of people stealing my hubs, but never took the time to investigate (That will change). Moving forward, all hubs will be authorized by Google. Refer to How To Claim Your Authorship With Google to claim ownership of content.

I will also be adding the necessary disclaimers for each article. Content that provides medical and nutritional information will have disclaimers referring the readers to medical doctors for professional consultation.

10. Updating Content for Relevancy, Broken Links and Wrong URLs

This is one of the most important tasks that has to be done continuously. It is also the hardest, especially for those with a lot of hubs. Checking hubs is time consuming but necessary in order to ensure the strongest content is there. The readers will appreciate this.

I have even found that I have an article under the wrong URL to my surprise. My hub "How to Spot Teenage Depression" is under the wrong URL: http://rasta1.hubpages.com/hub/How-to-Cure-Depression-without-Medicine

11. References

Using references is important in order to establish credibility regarding your work. It gives some sense of relief to the reader that you did not just make up stuff. It also shows that extensive time and energy was placed in the article that was written.

It is best to reference other websites that are already popular and have a high PR ranking. Referring to .GOV, .EDU or Wikipedia is great. Referencing books or research materials are also good.
