Please explain in detail how to pick high paying keywords?

Although I have been writing for years, my weakness is in marketing my finished products. For those of us of the older generation, would someone please explain in the vernacular how to pick high paying keywords?  Someone asked how they could earn more from google adsense and another replied "by picking high paying keywords." Am I having difficulty with this concept because of age or an aversion to technology or a combination of both?

Its a really useful task before one takes up writing task. Although the relevance of having key tags and key words has declined, and unique content is the key to get popularity in the long run, good key words still matter a lot. Thanks a lot for raising this issue.

Thank you for your reply, but I write based on knowledge, feelings and opinions. Never have I written a piece based on keywords. Where's the emotion in that? Please don't take this personally, but I was looking for a more definitive answer.

Many people like you and me (and most rightly) do write on issues based on their knowledge and experience, feelings and opinions.  But, within a limit, it is possible to incorporate keywords in writings. Have written a hub actuated from your question

If you haven't signed up for Google's Adwords, my advice is to do so.  They have a "Keyword Tool" that lets you research different keywords when you are trying to put together a hub.  Here's a hub that gives you a quick overview of how to use the tool.

Your other answers are right in that AdWords is the most helpful way to choose the best keywords. Basically, what you want is specific words or phrases that people who use search engines like Google or Bing will hunt for. If you have the right words, then Google will display your page in its results and people will be more inclined to visit you - especially if you rank high enough for your page to be seen in the first set of results. If you're writing about cherries, maybe your key words would be "best cherry varieties" or "the tastiest cherry."

I personally don't use AdWords, though and usually randomly pick keywords. I also do not use SEO (Search Engine Optimization), at least not intentionally. Although I might have some people screaming when I say this, I think that keywords and other marketing strategies corrupt my writing process. I write for fun, and when I start having to think about what words I should use and how I should use them, it feels more like work and it makes me not want to do it anymore. I am going to learn SEO and also the best way to use keywords because I want to start my own websites for profit.

Even without optimizing keywords or using SEO, at least 30% of my Hubs come up in the first page of Google's results, and three of them are the first result so I am getting good traffic.

I belong pretty much to the "older generation," Dennis, and I thought I'd wait to see the responses before putting in my two cents. I've been struggling to use Adwords more effectively, and one has to struggle to find ways to use them more effectively. I think the suggested Hub by tigresosal could be very useful - the challenge for you and me may be putting to use all that has been described! I believe content is more important. Anyway, good luck with your attempts!

Dear Prakhash Ji, Thanksor your note of appreciation. personally I dont think good writers like you should ever go for keyword. keywords reflect what people search for and when they land on your page, they go away by clicking on the Ad. Irony........

I recommend that you apply to the Apprenticeship Program. They provide detailed instructions, and then a dense, one-page instruction sheet. The general idea is to check options in Google Adwords. There is some good advice in the learning center. But detailed instructions are more than would fit in this answer space.

The best keywords are those which are highly relevant to contents, if we are talking about something and use a high paying keyword which may not mean exactly that then it is likely to perform poorly.

A keyword which is related to contents are actually high paying keywords for that contents.

Selecting high paying keywords from different sources means we have to develop contents relevant for them and we must understand it also means tough competition, as a number of writers will like to target them.

very true. A writer should never attempt building hubs around keywords.
