   I only publish articles in the hopes that Google search engine likes them. I'm not much interested, really, in anything else but making, hopefully, some money here.
   
   If readers who use Google search land on my article about whatever, and find that article useful - that is a mission accomplished for me.  Also, this is how you make money, your article pleases the people who landed on it from a search.

   I generally peruse by subject matter, but if the audience is full of trolls and negative people, I stop going there.

   A wonderful question for retrospection and a thought for the future. I don't write here for the money. I tried it for a while and just found the return was not worth the effect on my writing. The whole idea of doing SEO type things and putting ads up just does not fit with a Sunday Sermon. We all have callings and that is not mine.
   In my writing the balance just has to be found in both. So I shoot for absolutes in both and that drops me right in the middle. I just have to write about life's truths. But I have to write in such a way to communicate it well to a would be reader.
   The only way I have found to do this is passion. I've just got to be passionate about what I sermonize on. Then both influences find their home in comfortable harmony.
   Again great question to contemplate.

   Although keeping your audience in mind is important, I personally believe that an interest in the topic you are writing about is vital in any project. Passion for a subject is extremely apparent in any writing, whereas disinterest often leads to an uninspired or "run of the mill" piece that leaves the reader unsatisfied. However, once you've selected a topic that interests you, it's beneficial to be aware of the audience that will actually be reading what you've written. This can affect word choice, tone, or even the content of your writing. Audiences are obviously going to be more receptive of a piece that is written specifically for them.
   Overall, audience and subject are going to vary in importance at different  stages of the writing process. In selecting a topic, an interesting subject is more important than the potential audience, while when you actually start writing you should consider the audience that will be reading your work.

   When I write technical articles, I'm taking a complex subject and summarizing and explaining at a higher level than frugal living or parenting topics.
