will unfollowing someone make them unfollow me?

   I have so many people I follow and the problem is, I never read anyone's hubs, hardly ever, becasue it's so overwhelming.
   
   Would they notice
   would it be ok to stop following people?
   
   Just wondering.
   
   I'm really bad at reading stuff and I want to highlight the ones I esp want to read

      No, Hubpages has a goon squad that enforces social activity and they will delete all your hubs if you unfollow people.  Reverse-Adsense will go into effect and you will have to pay Google every month. You will receive the latest poetry hubs as voicemail spam on your home phone and you will be forced to listen to every last metric foot of sappy poetry before you can hang up the phone.  As a last resort, Jason Menayan will come to your house and cook meals based on the very worst of Hubpages recipes.  Beware!

            well, there's nothing you can do about that.  but losing a few followers or even a lot of followers won't impact your earnings. the vast majority of your Hubpages followers are not reading everything you write anyway.

               Great point! There are so many people being followed it's not likely the majority are reading your work anyway. So just do what you need to do and don't over think it.

   If you liked someones stuff enough to follow them, then why delete? You never know when you might get around to them again. If you still have a desire to read more, keep them around.

         I've stopped following plenty of people and it's never had any negative effect on my own followers.
         
         I follow maybe a dozen or so people.  Over 3700 people are listed as following me.  There's no connection between the two situations.
         
         If you don't want to follow someone, just stop following them.

   Hubpages has enough quality content to fill every minute of free time you have and then some. You likely have other things that round out your free time like reading, monster truck rallys, numismatics, etc. if someone doesn't agree with how you want invest your limited time, then they are quite arrogant.
   
   Interests change. Better Hubbers come along and bump inferior writers; this has happened to me. If I want to keep my followers, I need to step up my game.
   
   Unfollowing can be cathartic; it's like letting the phone ring not because you are too busy to answer, but because you can.
