    Hello Hubbers!
I'd like to give you a heads up about slideshow stats going away (sometime around the end of the week). We're removing them because:
    1. The information they provide has not been particularly useful
    2. The numbers we are able to provide are not entirely accurate, so even those who like to refer to these stats are not getting the information they really need

This is a small adjustment; we just want you to know about it so you don't think something is broken when the figure disappears! big_smile

Try not to be disheartened  smile where would we be without Simone keeping us updated? We would have forums full of confused people.

Thanks Simone for keeping us posted on this and other changes.

I also will be sorry to see them go but as Misty says they were very inconsistent to say the least.
Simone you did say that it is only the 'Stats' that are being retired not the 'slide show' feature itself.
I'm sure you will still be able to check the stats on Google Analytics if you so desire ?

I just noticed the slideshow stats yesterday, and I didn't realize I had any slideshows! Oh, well.

I did like it for my ASCII art posts. I got some idea for how many images people were finding via search engines versus those who came in for the text content.

How will that traffic be counted now? Quite a bit seemed to come in from image searches.

Traffic will be tracked in the same manner it is now.
The only thing we are removing is the counts for slideshow views.
This will have no impact on Hub views.

But the numbers for images and those for the post itself were different. I might have one for the post or none even. Yet the images had a dozen. Or, was that part of how it wasn't working right. Anyway, not a big deal. Numbers are only numbers. As long as I title the images they will still get picked up.

To be honest, I never paid much attention to them in the first place. But, I love updates, so thank you so much for the heads up. It would be my luck that I would all of a sudden have an itch to go look at the stats and they would be missing.

I didn't use them for anything anyway, but is there a plan to add something else to the soon-to-be blank columns?

Two hours since you posted and my stats already reflect the change.  Guess Wednesday is the end of the week somewhere. smile

Less numbers to look and such.

Sorry to hear that. But I don't know if anyone watched slideshows of Photos on my hubs ...  I didn't know about it or I am too lazy to have checked it out. But as long as people can still view our pictures, that is the main thing. The slideshow feature is a great way to view pictures together. Writing hubs that are always poetic in nature means that every picture can help a lot, as poems are not normally visual in that sense. Some poets use photos very well. It does make a difference.

About time, I certainly won't miss them, not least because they came and went every day or two anyway. Never could see the point in them regardless.

I'll be sorry to see them go.  It was always fun to see a hub with 3000 total views and 9000 slide show views.  Or another one with 500 views and 1500 slide show views.  Never really knew what a slide show view was, but it was interesting to see a few hubs get massive quantities of them.

The numbers were interesting but not particularly valuable.  I doubt it will doom us all to the dungeons of the Google basement.

I first read the title to mean slideshows were being removed, and rejoiced.

I still wish we had the choice of slideshows or not. Personally, I do not want them at all.

I concur. Removing the ability to turn off slideshows was a horrible idea. Removing the ability to enlarge a photo by clicking on it was worse. Please, please, please go back to the way it was before Hubpages fell in love with slideshows.

I'm a bit sad to see that occur... as Astra stated images and poetry work as one together!
My images have been ravaged by people from all over the world..  smile
Plus they've been laid out here like lollies in a lolly shop... begging to be scooped up for free, recycled into slideshows and used on U-tube etc to make money for enterprising lolly lickers!  sad

But really.... why were our images set up that way in the first place?

    wjack2010posted 10 years ago

I'm glad to see them go to be quite honest, I know for sure they were highly inaccurate, on a Hub that had around (rounded) 1000 views, the slideshow said there were about 4000 views...highly inaccurate.

I guess they also just take up un-needed bandwith, so a positive if you remove them.

Can't say I've ever seen any value in that particular stat anyway. On some of my hubs (with pics) slideshow stats are virtually zero, while on others they greatly exceed page views. Almost nothing pleases me more than getting page views, but equally, slideshow views, mean almost nothing to me! I write on HubPages and any photos I publish go hand in hand with the text, so I guess it would actually slightly upset me rather than please me if I felt lots of people were just looking at the pics and ignoring everything I'd written :-)

Unless there is a big advantage to slideshow stats on HubPages of which I am not aware, this is one stat which I'm happy to see disappear.

Thanks for the heads up, Simone.  I never did understand the use of it anyway, so goodbye, good riddance, sayonara, hasta la vista, adios to the Slideshow Stats.  RIP.  big_smile

    DzyMsLizzyposted 10 years ago

Oh, well.  I never noticed there were any separate stats for slideshows.  I only pay attention to stats for the entire article.  I don't see how this will be much of a loss for anyone.

Woohoo and about time, I never saw the use for them. Looks a lot neater now. Cheers. smile

A suggestion if I may, the hubs are listed in hubscore order by default, how important is this? The first thing I do is check to see which hubs are currently most viewed for the day, isn't that more important? I might be wrong.

    Steve.

Like many others apparently, I didn't know what  they were, and I am sure Simone knows, so best to leave these things to you, and not bother my pretty little head with them!

Just so long as the slideshow itself doesn't go away.  I like the slideshow.  It's a good bit of animation and one of the few ways we can still promote hubs that are no longer visible on our profile.

    1. Matthew Meyer profile image71
Matthew Meyerposted 10 years agoin reply to this

@cperuzzi The current plan is just to retire the counts and not the slideshows themselves.

  19. timorous profile image80

Fine by me. The slideshow stats never worked properly anyway. I remember posting a new photo gallery, and the next day it had maybe 20 hub views but 2500 slideshow views..yeah right. Also the heading for the slideshow on the statistics page was seldom aligned properly, so you didn't know what it referred to.

Good to keep the actual slideshows though, since some of my photos are fairly detailed, which you can only see if you watch the slideshow (which is larger and displays the full resolution I uploaded).

The slideshow images are larger than the article images, but are still smaller than when an image could be viewed by clicking on it-- like in the "old" days.

If I can suggest a new use for the old column, it would be word count per hub. It currently takes several keystrokes to check that for each hub, and so many things are variously assumed to be dependent on total word count.

Good tip! I'll bring that up in our next community meeting. Though there are some other things we're thinking of including in the recently-opened column, I like this idea, too. big_smile

Making slideshows mandatory was a big boo-boo.  I too would be much happier with that being an optional feature.
