I have a few concerns...and am not sure how to address them all. First an easy suggestion would be an exotic pets category. This can include all sorts of animals including wolves and wolfdogs, exotic cats such as the Savannah and Bengal, even all the way down to flying squirrels and sugar gliders which are small but usually fall into the exotic category.
That was the easy one! Wild and Exotic Animals seems to be the wrong title for this group. After all, it includes all animals that aren't grouped somewhere else.
Zoo Animals (or Zoos and Zoo Animals farther down) seem to be best as just Zoos since the category breakdown is about different zoo types, ect. Additionally any "zoo animals" would also fall into the "wild and exotic".
Endangered Animals has groups such as "Birds" but gets specific about the Siberian Tiger. Wouldn't it be better to do "Big Cats" and other groups so as not to pick out a few endangered animal species for the second level. After all, there are a lot of endangered animals.
Other then that...it looks good!
Hi Aiden,
Thanks very much for your comments!
I agree with you about changing the title from "Zoo Animals" to "Zoos" and also about "Endangered Animals." As you can tell, I started to list out animals but then the list got too big. I agree with you its better to just list categories and not call out specific animals.
I like your suggestion of splitting "Exotic Pets" and "Wild Animals" into two different categories.
-Larry
Wow - great idea! My eyeballs are spinning from all the categories!
Hi Larry!
Under Animal Rights... is that Animal Clothes and Fashion as in clothes *for* animals?? Or clothes *from* animals???
I would maybe change that from seeing eye dog to assistance dog, because guide dogs are also used for narcolepsy and hearing impaired people. Or you could call it assistance animals... there are assistance horses for the blind!
Id also put Dog Rescue and Cat Rescue under their respective categories.
Under Dogs: Food, Bedding, Grooming, Toys, and of course Fashion!
And First Aid for Pets too!
Hi Isabella,
Thanks for your comments!
To be clear, under Animal Rights, I meant "clothes for animals". I agree with you that this point should be made clearer.
I agree that "Assistance Animals" is a more inclusive category. Nice suggestion.
I will also implement your suggestions for Dog Rescue, Cat Rescue, Animal Fashion.
-Larry
Under "wild and exotic" - animals such as chinchillas, etc.
And going along with isabella snow's idea - a rescue category is good, but why limit it to just cats and dogs when animals of all varieties need rescuing. And going along with that what about animal adoption?
Fully support animal first aid btw!!!
Hi Rainbow Brite,
Thanks for your comments.
I'll find a place for Animal Rescue in addition to Dog Rescue and Cat Rescue.
I have an Animal Adoption category under Animal Rights.
-Larry
Yes, I thought about that after I posted... it would be good to see an animal rescue category for everything, including wild animals. But I do think that individual categories should include dog rescue, cat rescue as well, because I think it would make more people aware that they exist.
I think it's a good idea in general. On the other hand, it might make hubpages look a lot like ezine article sites. My final vote: no, maybe.
@Stacie L: We are working on tools to make it as easy as possible to specify categories for existing hubs.
@Benson Yeung: Thanks for your feedback. We are working hard to make this work. Our plan is that you will see a uniquely HubPages look-and-feel that makes it easier to navigate through HubPages and easier for the search traffic to find categorized hubs.
I posted this on the new thread about the update, but thought it would fit here better...
Can we still suggest sections? I have been trying to categorize my hubs and there isn't a veterinary section, animal health, or say dog> dog health> cancer, disease, illness, vaccinations, etc.
I think a general veterinary section would work well, but then you may consider a health section for dogs, cats, birds, etc. to specify the differences.
Also, can you add American Pit Bull Terrier to the list of dog breeds? Although, the breed may not be accepted by the AKC, it is accepted by other dog registries.
And, since there is a flea & Tick control under the cat section, can there be one for the dog section?
Larry, is there a pet behavior category? Or could you add a cat training category?
Hi Whitney,
I've added a Cat Training category in Pets & Animals/Cats/Cat Training.
I've also added an Animal Behavior category in Pets & Animals/Animal Care & Safety/Animal Behavior.
-Larry
Can we add Hedgehogs to the rodent and small mammal pet section?
Hi Whitney05,
Thanks for the suggestion. I've just added it.
-Larry
Thanks Larry!
How about Dog History instead of History of Dog Breeds.
Hi Whitney05,
Thanks for the suggestion. I've changed the category name to "Dog History"
-Larry
Great addition to the site.
However there are three main groups of Setters, not just Irish. There are also English and Gordon (AKA Scottish).
There are sub groups but these three are the main ones.
Hi Profmaggy,
Thanks for noticing that.
I confirmed that English Setter and Gordon Setter are currently listed in the Pets & Animals/Dogs/Dog Breeds (in addition to Irish Setters)
-Larry
Please add Border Collie as a breed, in addition to the Rough and Smooth Collies. They are very different breeds with different working styles and abilities. The Border Collie breed is the preeminent herding dog, as well as a regular National Obedience Championship winner as well as National Agility Championship and National Rally Championship winning dogs.
Lassie is a collie - these are border collies.
You need a place for wildlife and for service and other working animals
The term "animal rights" should be replaced with something like animal protection or human-animal interaction. Animal rights has a much more specific meaning (I am currently co-writing a textbook on this subject). Having some activities only appear under a philosophy that says they are basically evil and should be banned is super-biased.
Honestly, it would make more sense to just use the MeSH terms and add any extras you need.
